Career

Simon’s career in the entertainment industry started in 1986 when he began working as a concert promoter and artist manager. Recognising that his interest lay more in the business and contractual side of the industry, he returned to college to study law, emerging in 2004 to work at a leading independent record company. He joined Russells in 1995 qualifying in 1997 and was appointed managing partner in 2015. He is privileged to have a varied and successful client base including artists (both established and new), managers, songwriters, dancers, producers/mixers, record and publishing companies, party organisers, models, radio presenters/DJ’s, illustrators, concert promoters and concert production companies. Simon sits on the Teenage Cancer Trust Music Board.

The ‘exceptional’ team at Russells Solicitors has ‘extensive experience’ in the music sector, and acts for record companies, publishers, producers and leading agencies, as well as established and emerging artists. Litigator John Reid handles a range of media and entertainment disputes, including reputation management and privacy cases. Key work included representing musician and songwriter Ben Martinez in a dispute with Jessie J over the rights to several of her songs; and advising the estate of George Michael on a range of matters. Mark Sinnott is praised for his ‘unrivalled wealth of experience and knowledge’ and regularly represents music companies on complex contractual negotiations. Chris Gossage heads the corporate department, which includes recently promoted partner Ryan Vince; and Gavin Maude , who heads the new artist department, which includes Jo Brittain.  Gossage and Maude advised singer Mika on re-negotiations with Italian state-run broadcaster, Rai Uno, over the renewal for a second series of his TV show, which is broadcast on Italian national TV; Gossage also advised X-Ray Touring on the negotiation of a joint venture partnership, involving a multimillion-pound partial purchase of the business by US-based Paradigm Talent Agency and investment fund, Yucaipa. Chris Organ, litigation head Steven Tregear and consultant Brian Howard  are also standout individuals. Digital and social media group head Mark Ashelford recently joined from Lee & Thompson LLP and solicitor Peter Mason recently joined from PPL. Simon Esplen leads the team.
