The firm

Founded in 1896, Withers is a leading international law firm comprising over 160 partners and more than 1,000 staff across 16 strategically located offices in Asia, Australia, Europe, the United States and the Caribbean. The firm has advised many multinational companies, financial institutions, philanthropic organisations, as well as the wealthiest families throughout the world. It has acted for 51% of the top 100 UK’s ‘Sunday Times Rich List’ and 30% of Hong Kong’s ‘Forbes Rich List’. Its clients benefit from over 100 years of experience developed through acting for successful clients with interests in over 100 countries globally.

Established in 2008, its Hong Kong office has an extensive breadth and depth of legal resources with experienced lawyers and professionals from various countries. Its lawyers in Hong Kong work closely with other professionals in its offices to provide comprehensive international legal advice to its clients.

Areas of practice

Private client: Withers has one of the largest international private client legal teams in Asia, enabling it to provide a wide range of services in multiple languages in the same time zone as its clients, making the legal advice both cost-and time-efficient. This has also enabled the firm to respond to client needs by forming dedicated teams to service entrepreneurs, families, family offices, investment and private banks, trust companies, landed estates and the globally wealthy. Its substantial presence across Asia is further strengthened with offices in the US, Europe and the British Virgin Islands.

Family: Withers has one of the largest family law teams in Hong Kong. Led by Sharon Ser and Rita Ku, co-heads of the department, its award-winning family law team in Hong Kong advises on all areas of family law, including divorce, child custody, financial claims including cases where there are substantial international assets, trusts and family businesses, injunctions to protect against violence and asset stripping as well as international nuptial agreements. It also acts for many high-net-worth individuals with global and complex assets involving international trusts and complex corporate structure.

Corporate and commercial: Withers’ corporate team acts for listed and private companies, financial institutions, entrepreneurs, families and high-net-worth individuals and not-for-profit organisations. Its specialist areas of practice include banking and finance, corporate finance, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and property and real estate. In July this year, it continued to strengthen its corporate practice in Asia through the hire of an 11-strong team led by Mabel Lui, recognised as one of the outstanding corporate lawyers in the region, who joins the firm as head of Greater China commercial practice.
