‘Richard Palmer: Highly experienced. Very incisive. Gives firm advice. Very effective in mediation. Anne-Marie Knight: Tenacious. Great with clients. Also very skilled in mediation. Tom Thurlow. Exceptional ability to analysis cases and plan strategies. A rising star.’

‘The team I work with at Weightmans are highly cohesive. They seem to work in a very collaborative way. Where work can be carried out at a more junior level for a lower fee, the partners will ensure that those juniors are involved at the appropriate stages and I believe this means that costs are kept proportionate. Having said this, I like to see that there are no more than two or three fee-earners of different levels working on the file. Other firms often render bills where there are multiple fee-earners recording time on a file and i always think this leads to duplication. I think the strength of this team at Weightmans lies in the way they work collaboratively with one another and the end product, i.e. their reports / advice, are very high-quality / well-produced.’

‘One of the stand-out partners for me is Richard Palmer. I have worked with him (and once upon a time, for him) for a long time. What I admire about Richard is his ability to understand what motivates the opposition and what it is they are most concerned about. More often than not, this is the key that unlocks the door to settlement. On top of this, while Richard gives a very thorough analysis of the legal issues, his advice is always pragmatic and commercial. I trust Richard as a safe pair of hands.’

‘Another stand-out partner is Anne-Marie Knight. I usually send Anne-Marie complicated construction professional negligence disputes. What I love about Anne-Marie is her ability to disarm any aggressive opponent with her calm composure. In difficult and sometimes heated disputes, Anne-Marie is unrattled. I admire her common-sense approach and also her ability to build up a constructive rapport with opponents at the same time as maintaining a robust position. She gets results.’

‘Richard Palmer (partner) and Katy Ames (associate) make an excellent team. Both are immensely likeable, intelligent, considered, practical and prompt. They give thorough consideration to all aspects of a matter before providing their advice. What is particularly impressive, is that they are both thorough and prompt. They clearly allocate resources in a very effective way.’

‘Approachable, knowledgeable, pragmatic, commercial, great legal advocates.’

‘Amy Nesbitt – Partner – Absolute ownership of the relationship with our office, with an open and candid approach to all matters and detailed oversight of claims under the teams’ purview. Lauren Whiting – Associate – A great asset to the team and key to the successful management of challenging cases!’

Testimonials

‘I have worked with Sally Cook, she consistently keeps me updated on the various jobs worked on, very well organised, provides me with well informed information – technical and general. Communication is essential and she conveys this information both professionally and in a user friendly manner.’

‘Weightmans has given me an exceptional blend of skills that I have found unique compared to the many practices that have provided me services over the years. They have given me a very tailored personal service, being extremely responsive to my many questions and requests, provided very good informed advice and then completed work in a very timely manner. This blend is very rare from my experience.’

‘Richard Bate has taken what to me is a complex subject and provided a very simple and defined framework to deal with the complexities of trust, probate and tax work. I have found that Richard responds immediately to requests and quickly puts in place a plan of action. I have full confidence in Richard as my legal advisor.’

‘I found the team very quick to pick up the issues and focus on the real issues and the deliverable. They returned calls and e-mails promptly and kept the probate office and HMRC on task which was no mean achievement at this time. They wrote in easy to understand English and did not make mountains out of molehills. I found the charges reasonable for coping with the bureaucracy involved and there was transparency in the fee process throughout.’

‘We primarily dealt with 2 individuals, Richard Bate and Lorraine Wilson. Both knew their job very well and showed real professionalism, a clear understanding of what we were trying to achieve and practical common sense coupled with a very sound knowledge of the law on how to get there. I would have no hesitation in recommending them for this type of work (will, probate and trust) both for planning and delivery.’

‘I dealt with Sally Cook who was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and provided an excellent service. She was easy to work with, dealt with any queries quickly and made me feel that nothing was too much trouble. She gave full and clear advice and dealt with matters promptly. She clearly has a good understanding of her subject.’

‘I have mainly dealt with the Weightmans personal tax, trusts and probate practice in Manchester (specifically Lorraine Wilson). I have always found the team to be very responsive, technically excellent and operate a problem solving approach to all matters. I have been very happy with the standard of work and service provided and I have no hesitation in referring my clients to the team (I am a Scottish solicitor) when they require specific advice on this particular area of English Law.’

‘I trust Lorraine Wilson’s technical knowledge implicitly. She is always very approachable and professional and quick to respond to correspondence. I value her commercial awareness in trying to find the most efficient and cost effective solution to any issue that I refer to her.’

They have a wide range of specialists who bring expertise to the different aspects of a case where needed. We had transferred our case to Weightmans from another firm who had failed to make any headway and yet generated high costs for little progress. This previous experience contrasted in every way to the highly professional, legally strategic, and caring approach of Weightmans and we cannot praise them highly enough.’

‘The team consistently deals with high quality work and deals with that work in a very high-quality manner. They are approachable, always quick to respond, and are very thorough. When I am instructed by the team as counsel, I know I will be receiving a very good brief, with very good instructions.’

The systems provide detailed billing so that I can see exactly what work has been carried out within the period which is essential when tracking actual time and costs versus budgeted time and costs.’

‘Anthony Rance in particular has always gone above and beyond in all aspects of work that he has undertaken. No matter what time day or night, if an urgent issue arose, or a deadline was fast approaching, he would always do whatever was required to get the job done in his usual professional and diligent manner.’

The team, led by Andrew Cox, is praised as ‘approachable, quick to respond, and very thorough’. Key contacts include ‘very professional, commercial, and strong communicator’ Anthony Rance, ‘robust but commercially-minded’ associate John McWilliams, and ‘excellent’ James Peel and Charles Boyne.

Testimonials

‘Weightmans has a talented multi-disciplined team of legal professionals who have demonstrated their agility to work cohesively to deliver solutions to complex commercial transactions’

‘James Peel was extremely professional, assisted by Charles Boyne. The process was delivered in a kind manner and we were comforted by their approach.’

‘Anthony Rance – partner – very professional, commercial and a strong communicator Mark Reeves – associate’

‘We experienced a very positive and excellent service with the team at Weightmans who have broad and professional legal expertise.

‘John McWilliams, Principal Associate in Leeds, stands out. He is exceptionally thorough, and always fights hard for his clients. His oral and written communication with counsel, clients and opponents is always impressive. He is robust but remains commercially minded.’

‘The Weightmans team are pragmatic with their approach to an issue while also being able to think outside of the box to find the best and most effective solution. The approach they take allows for me to easily review documents and to collaborate with them, where appropriate, to ensure that the work is carried out in the most effective way, thereby saving time and money.
