Chris joined Birketts in 2005. He is a Partner in our Agriculture Team.

Chris specialises in agricultural land transactions, both in respect of sales and purchases and also acting for landlords and tenants in relation to agricultural tenancy issues. Chris has a particular specialism in acting for landowners in relation to renewable energy leases and leads the firm’s agricultural banking function acting for both banks and landowners in relation to secured borrowing. He also deals with a wide range of private client work including lifetime tax planning.

Chris is a member of the Agricultural Law Association and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Chris manages the firm’s involvement in Norfolk ProHelp, a scheme by which local firms provide professional services to charities, voluntary groups and the like, on a pro-bono basis.

Among its clients are Norwich Diocesan Board of Finance, National Westminster Bank, Suffolk Wildlife Trust and HSBC Bank, as well as many landowners across the UK. Practice head Jack Royall handles property matters including landlord and tenant cases, partnership and succession planning, farm sales and diversification projects. He recently handled the review and documentation of shooting, stalking, farming, grazing and cropping arrangements on a multimillion-pound estate. The deep bench of talent includes Neil Sparrow, who handles farm sales and matters involving capital tax and estate planning, wills and trusts; Christopher Coupland who leads the firm’s agricultural banking team and also deals with property transactions; property specialist James Dinwiddy ; Nigel Farthing who has a national practice dealing with public rights of way, commons and town and village greens; legal director Stuart Jones who advises landowners and mineral operators on the development and management of mineral deposits; and legal director Rachel McKillop-Wilkin who deals with property and succession issues. ‘Excellent communicator’ and senior associate Sophia Key in Norwich is praised for her ‘perseverance, quality advice and great knowledge and understanding of all matters associated with agricultural land and farms'.
