Malaysia > Dispute resolution Tier 4

The firm: Ariff Rozhan & Co (ARC) is a firm established in 2015 focusing primarily on dispute resolution, led by its principal partners, Ariff Rozhan, William Lim, and Christopher Arun.

ARC’s principal partners were all former partners in Malaysia’s largest law firm where Ariff was also a member of the executive committee and head of its dispute resolution and arbitration practice.

Prior to joining the firm in April 2016, Ezane Chong was a partner in the dispute resolution practice of one of Malaysia’s largest and most established law firms.

Services: ARC provides uncompromisingly focused and personalised legal services. It is also less affected by issues of conflict because of its focus on dispute resolution.

ARC’s Malaysian clients include the largest banks in Malaysia and the Malaysian Offshore Financial Services Authority, the largest power providers, the largest oil palm producer in the world, and Malaysian conglomerates with interest in the plantation, energy, gaming, utilities, infrastructure, logistic, engineering & construction industries. ARC also acts for international clients like Shell, Murphy Oil, PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP), Airbus, Volkswagen and The Dar Group of Companies from the Middle East.

Experience: Partners and lawyers in ARC have all been involved in a plethora of cases for local and international clients, involving complex, novel and dynamic issues of law. These cases showcase the width and breadth of ARC’s experience, as well as demonstrating the depth and strength of its expertise.

For example, our team members were amongst the first Malaysian lawyers exposed to unchartered “Securities Law” issues, disputes on “Offshore Trust Licenses and regulations”, conducting “Forensic Litigation Due Diligence exercises” for local and international clients, and conducting, as lead Counsel, cross-border disputes and international commercial arbitrations involving multiple jurisdictional issues.

ARC is also ranked and recommended by many legal publications both regionally and globally.

ARC’s managing partner, Ariff, has also been recommended by peers as a “Top Litigation Expert” and was ranked as a Leading Litigation and Dispute Resolution practitioner in Malaysia by various legal publications and he was also named as one of Malaysia’s top 100 Lawyers. Christopher, William and Ezane have also all been recommended in their field of expertise by various legal publications.

CLIENT: Bee-Lee See

COMPANY/FIRM: Head of Content, Consider Digital Sdn Bhd

TESTIMONIAL: I first met Ariff while he was partner at Zaid Ipahim in the context of an extraordinary business crisis impacting my company. Ariff proved to be an invaluable resource, not just because he understood the complexities of running a business within the design constraints of Malaysia’s legal and political system, but also because he was determined to help stand by our multinational prerequisites of keeping everything above board. He and his team leveraged our strengths towards achieving our legal objectives and positioning strategy with all stakeholders involved. He was always available no matter how big or small the request and approached tasks with the same high-level of attention to detail and grit even though we must be pretty small clients in his portfolio. I always felt confident with Ariff advising me. Since then, Ariff has started his own company in ARC, and I have been enormously grateful to have his continued support in staying compliant with Malaysia’s evolving competition and commercial practises.

CLIENT: Yash Bheroo

COMPANY/FIRM: Barrister, 3 Verulam Buildings

TESTIMONIAL: Ariff Rozhan stands out as a start. He is highly experienced having worked at powerhouse sets in the region. In this regard, both Ariff and Ezane are extremely knowledgeable in a variety of areas of law. It is very impressive how quickly and exponentially the Firm has grown under their direction and it is a Firm to watch. Ariff’s work in multiple jurisdictions has strengthen his ability to give commercial and pragmatic advice to the firm’s clients, which puts him at a huge advantage over other lawyers. He recently acted on a family and commercial matter for one of the wealthiest individuals in Malaysia dealing with complex areas of trust law. He makes the right tactical decisions and recognise that cases are not won on just points of law, but also on taking the right decisions along the way. He works at all hours and is always contactable at short notice, even where time differences of 8 hours exist. Ariff Rozhan is a seasoned advocate who crafted his skills at the English bar and it has carried through to his Malaysian practise as a trusted and senior advocate who commands the attention of the court.

Having started his own firm, I have no doubt Ariff will go from success to further success.

What do you see as the main points that differentiate ariff rozhan & co from your competitors?

As a firm that primarily focuses on Disputes, we are less likely to encounter issues of conflicts, giving us access to a broader and more varied range of clientele.

Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

Regulatory and Malaysian Offshore – due to stricter control by relevant authority and willingness to take enforcement action against those who are in breach of the law; Bolder moves by Offshore Companies who are willing to test limits imposed by regulatory authorities.

What’s the main change you’ve made in the firm that will benefit clients?

Increase in number of partners and lawyers so that quality of advice and response time to urgent queries are not only maintained but improved.

Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

Introduced client to new insurers who we act for, who in turn, have offered better rates for the client’s insurance needs.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

Clients look for pragmatic, commercial and realistic advice commensurate with their respective goals which change from time to time depending on what they want to achieve. Being versatile enough to do continuously meet client’s everchanging needs is the value add that clients look for.

We see ourselves diversifying into other non-contentious practice areas in the next 3 years, to meet our clients needs and demands.
