The firm

Halim Hong & Quek (HHQ) has seen tremendous growth since its inception in 2000. HHQ has four areas of practice, namely banking and finance, corporate and M&A, dispute resolution and real estate and project development. With growing demand from foreign investors following the Belt & Road initiative that sees more co-operation between Malaysia and other participating countries, HHQ has set up its Belt & Road law desk catering to their legal needs.

Believing that technology is a necessity in achieving its mission, HHQ has embarked on Project Online to develop its client web portal and mobile application, HHQ Touch, reckoned to change the way clients deal with legal matters.

Areas of practice

Banking and finance: this is a core area of practice in HHQ. Its team has experience in providing advisory service in all aspects of property financing transactions, Islamic financing and corporate financing. Its services include preparation and review of security documentation. HHQ’s team advises on drawdown of facility, perfection of charge and ensuring that clients’ interests are protected at all times.

The firm also assists financially distressed clients in their negotiations of their reorganisation plan and compliance with legal and regulatory regimes, and drafting of agreements. It represents clients in refinancing exercise and advises from the redemption process to completion of refinancing process.

Corporate practice: HHQ is at the forefront in representing investors and entrepreneurs making their debut entry in investments in Malaysia. Its experienced team in the corporate practice provides advisory service sand legal support in a wide range of commercial services, among others, cross-border investments, international trade, due diligence, merger and acquisitions, joint ventures and shareholders agreement.

Dispute resolution: HHQ provides advisory services and legal support in a wide range of areas of dispute, amongst others, divorce and family, employment, immigration and general litigation. The team possesses experience as both solicitors and counsel who regularly appear at various levels of the court in Malaysia. The firm has acted for several major organisations in their claim for recovery of debts and disputes relating to housing and strata properties.

In addition, the team represents litigants in public interest litigation including the Batang Kali massacre litigation that has now reached the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The firm provide pro-bono or cost-effective packages and other innovative funding to enable litigants to seek redress for their grievances.

Real estate: HHQ works closely and develops strong working relationships with major developers. The real estate team headed by Chong Lee Hui is well-versed with the legal and practical aspects of their practice. HHQ provides advisory services on guarded neighbourhood community projects, development of industrial land and commercial areas and strata properties. In urban and township development, it is involved from the very initial stage in the project development, from advisory in master plans to providing legal framework for development of integrated townships. HHQ also represents individual purchasers in sub-sale transactions to complete the sale and purchase transactions including transfer of properties out of love and affection.
