Bircham Dyson Bell recruits DLA partner to strengthen ‘one-stop-shop’ approach to major projects

December 2009

Bircham Dyson Bell (BDB) today announced Nick Maltby as partner, and Head of Major Projects (Commercial). Maltby joins from DLA Piper, where he was a partner in the Finance & Projects Group. He will work within BDB’s market-leading Major Projects Group and will focus on the commercial aspects of major projects – procurement, contracting and funding, including PPPs & PFIs.

Robbie Owen, partner and Head of Major Projects at BDB said:

"We are delighted that Nick has chosen to join the firm. His arrival means that we have made good progress  towards fulfilling one of our major strategic aims.  This is to strengthen and broaden our offering in the commercial aspects of major projects, for example procurement, contracting and financing, so complementing the strong profile we currently have in the planning/authorisation, regulatory and real estate areas. The result of this and related initiatives will in due course be a market-leading ‘one-stop-shop' consultancy for all legal aspects of major projects and for their public affairs and communications requirements".

Recognised in the Chambers and Legal 500 directories Nick Maltby's expertise covers a broad range of sectors, and particularly in the fields of education, health, transport, commercial and competition law. He acts for public sector bodies, consortia, funders and service providers both in the UK and internationally.

Commenting on his decision to join BDB Maltby said:

"The reputation of BDB's Major ProjectsGroup has been growing significantly in recent years, both with other practitioners in the sector, and with promoters of major projects. They continue to work on a diverse range of significantly important infrastructure projects and their strategy and investment plans to ensure continued growth and success in this area of expertise impressed me greatly".

BDB's Major Projects Group acts for a wide range of clients including Transport for London (TfL), DP World, Thames Water, National Grid, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), Nottingham City Council, Merseytravel and English Heritage. The Group includes one of the largest planning law teams in the UK.

Welcoming Nick Maltby to BDB Guy Vincent, Managing Partner said:

"It has been a strategic objective to strengthen the commercial side of our Major Projects Group and I am personally pleased that we have been able to recruit someone of Nick's calibre to take the lead on this".

  • Opposing lease renewal proceedings on the ground of redevelopment

Redevelopment is (alongside the ground of owner occupation) perhaps the most common of the bases upon which a landlord might seek to deny a tenant’s entitlement to a new lease of business premises. The following serve as some useful points to remember when a landlord seeks to rely upon the ground of redevelopment for denying a tenant a new lease of business premises.
