Nick is a corporate finance lawyer, advising on mergers and acquisitions, management buy-outs and buy-ins, structured finance, private equity funding, and joint ventures. Nick joined Trethowans in August 2010, having previously been a partner in the corporate team at Blake Lapthorn. He has also worked on secondment as an in-house counsel to a quoted Plc. Nick qualified in 1994 and is described as a ‘stand-out lawyer’ in Legal 500 and is ranked as a leading lawyer in Chambers in relation to Corporate and M&A work, being ‘praised for his commercial outlook, with clients appreciating his ability “to simplify complex legal terminology into plain English”’. Recent work: the sale of Kylmar (KMC) Limited, an industry leader in the design and manufacture of sensor and optical surveillance systems for military and security applications, to General Dynamics; raising $13m as development capital from two US corporate investors for a company in the energy sector; advising on the funding for the MBO of the Raymond Brown Group; advising Mail Solutions Group Limited on its acquisition of a controlling interest in Empire Envelopes Limited. Trethowans LLP acted for the shareholders on the sale of the entire issued share capital of iSupply Energy to German energy corporate Vattenfall. Riskstop Group, Baker Perkins and Saint-Gobain/Jewson are other clients. The group's expertise includes corporate finance, M&A, disposals and joint venture agreements, where is acts for clients ranging from SMEs to plcs. Key team members include practice head Mike Watson, Nick Gent, Paula Eckton and newly made-up partner Lucy Grey.

Trethowans LLP's dedicated banking team handles a range of matters, from acquisition finance mandates for lenders and investors, property and development finance, and agricultural finance transactions. Recent highlights include advising the borrower in a series of development loan facilities, assisting an international car parts manufacturer with an $18.5m facility to finance its management buyout, and acting for Bank of Scotland on a £5m term loan facility and £1m revolving credit facility provided to Ceuta Holdings. Sophie Eales heads the banking practice, which includes Nick Gent and property finance specialists Paul Longman and David Jones.

Trethowans LLP established its Bournemouth-based corporate and commercial practice with the arrival Mark Nixon – ‘an intelligent and decisive’ corporate and M&A lawyer, who joined the firm from Blake Morgan LLP. Since joining the firm, Nixon advised the shareholders of iSupply Energy on the highly publicised sale of its entire issued share capital to Sweden-based Vattenfall. Similarly, Nixon assisted the shareholders of a local medical care business on the sale of its entire issued share capital to a French buyer. Further, Nixon often works alongside the firm’s Southampton-based corporate, employment and banking practitioners. Mike Watson heads the corporate group from the firm’s Southampton office, which also includes Nick Gent.
