Career

Marelda has more than ten years’ experience in insolvency, banking recovery and restructuring work. She has advised on a wide range of bankruptcy, corporate insolvency, securities enforcement and commercial litigation.

She acts on behalf of insolvency practitioners, secured lenders, directors and creditors in providing advice on all aspects of external administrations, including asset realisation and court proceedings commenced as a result of a company’s insolvency. Marelda also acts on behalf of several banks in recovery of corporate and commercial debts.

Marelda has experience in advising clients from industries such as banking and finance, manufacturing, retail, and extractive industries. In recent times, she has acted in several large scale forestry managed investment scheme administrations.

Marelda is recommended as an Insolvency and Reconstruction Lawyer in the 2016 Doyles Guide. She is also ranked in the Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2014-2016 and Best Lawyers 2013-2015 for Insolvency and Reorganisation. The IFLR 100 notes Marelda is: ‘Very thorough and very commercial, able to strike a good balance. Even the junior staff are good, which is a reflection of her.’

Maddocks is particularly active in the contentious space and asset recovery issues; it acted for Ferrier Hodgson as liquidators and special purpose receivers of Banksia Securities in litigation arising from its collapse and represented a finance manager in claims related to the collapse of an investment vehicle alleged to have been unregistered managed investment schemes. The group's non-contentious work includes advising Pitcher Partners as trustees of the bankrupt estate of a mining entrepreneur in a public examination and the negotiation of a funding agreement, and assisting PCI Partners as liquidator of Gordon Ramsey Melbourne with all aspects of its liquidation. Team leader David Newman, Michael Johns and Marelda Hibberd are the key names to note.
