Stone King’s Women’s Focus Group meet on a regular basis having gained momentum over the last 12 months. The starting point for the group was to explore themes to be agreed as the most relevant to address. The consensus was that SK offers an excellent supportive working environment – this having been recognised by Investors in People recently in their Gold award. However, there were concerns that the partnership didn’t reflect balanced representation. In 2014 16% of the Partnership were women, this increased to 20% in 2015 and to 24% this year. Positive messaging and communication via the Women’s Focus Group have been credited towards these steps in the right direction.

We are members of Business in the Community’s (BITC) Gender campaign, which highlights our commitment to women in the business. We are working with BITC in providing further internal training for both sexes; for example, unconscious bias training and increased education for our senior people on the importance of women’s progression as a business priority. We also recognise the importance of focusing on internal policies that work for both sexes – increased opportunity for agile working and promoting shared parental leave being a couple of examples.  Our aim is to work towards 50/50 representation in the Partnership. The pipeline of strong female candidates coming through over the coming years is encouraging.

We are also currently working with a number of other mid-sized law firms who currently do not have their own network group to create a LGBT forum called LeGal BesT. This is a good way of pooling resources to look at how we can be a more diverse and inclusive employer. We recognise that often new joiners, in particular, can feel closeted starting work and we want to promote an environment that encourages individuals to be themselves.
