Specialist in financial services investigations, enforcement actions and financial litigation. Has represented firms and senior management in relation to retail mis-selling, market abuse, insider dealing, financial promotions, split capital investment trusts, contingent commissions, financial reinsurance, conflicts of interest, systems and controls issues and cases before the Financial Ombudsman Service. Advised the FSA and spent time on secondment there as head of the FSA’s Equitable Life judicial inquiry unit. Principal pro-bono legal adviser to the Outdoor Swimming Association.

Career: Trained Freshfields, qualified 1997, litigation department 1997-2006, secondment to Sotheby’s legal department 2000-01, secondment to the Financial Services Authority 2002; Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP, partner and head of FSA investigations and enforcement 2007 to date.   • New Commission

    On Friday 27 November 2009 the new European Commission, which will begin its mandate early in 2010, was announced by Commission President José Barroso. This announcement followed a week after the appointment of Herman Van Rompuy and Catherine Ashton as the President of the European Council and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy respectively, the two new roles created by the Lisbon Treaty, which entered into force on 1 December 2009.

    1 What are the main statutes and regulations relating to employment? The main statutes relating to employment are the Portuguese Employment Code (approved by Law 7/2009 of 12 February 2009) and the Regulation of the Employment Code (Law 35/2004 of 29 July 2004) which is still in force notwithstanding the fact that parts have been revoked with the entry into force of the new Employment Code.
