Practising primarily in the area of commercial litigation, Peter’s experience sees him work across a number of industries in relation to litigious matters, as well as non-litigious matters requiring court approval. Highly principled, Peter aims to resolve matters with minimum disruption to his clients.

Peter works with clients to bring and resolve disputes arising primarily from contractual breakdowns, misleading or deceptive conduct and other competition, consumer or defamation claims.

His areas of industry expertise include mining and resources, intellectual property and technology, property and native title.

Peter also specialises in administrative law.  His judicial review experience includes advising government clients in relation to proper decision making processes, and acting for government and private clients in the Queensland and Federal Courts in relation to reviews under the Administrative Decisions (Judicial Review) Act (Cth), the Judicial Review Act 1991 (Qld), and the Judiciary Act 1903 (Cth).

Peter acts for clients in schemes of arrangement under the Corporations Act and manages litigation due diligence for corporate clients in relation to M&A matters.

Previously working in-house at the global head office of an international travel group, Peter assisted with dispute matters as well as commercial negotiations with travel services and software suppliers.

Dispute resolution

Within: Dispute resolution

McCullough Robertson's ‘efficient, effective and exceptionally responsive’ practice is commended for its ‘practical approach’. Agribusiness, construction and natural resources disputes are its core strengths; Peter Stokes, who ‘seamlessly instructs large teams and gets the best out of his lawyers’, continues to act for Adani in arbitration proceedings against John Holland regarding delays and changes to the Abbot Point coal terminal in Queensland. Guy Humble heads the group; ‘outstanding communicator’ Russell Thirgood, restructuring and insolvency specialist Scott Butler and regulatory expert Tim Case are other names to note. Commercial litigation and regulatory head Jason Munstermann joined from now-defunct firm Henry Davis York.

Belinda Breakspear's team at McCullough Robertson advises clients on brand protection and management matters. The team has continued to grow its contentious capacities; Breakspear acts on behalf of the Australian Agricultural Company for its international trade mark portfolio management. Terry White Chemmart instructs the team to handle international enforcement mandates. Litigator Peter Stokes in Brisbane and Alex Hutchens and Paul McLachlan, both in Sydney, are singled out. The team has been bolstered by the addition of Matthew McMillan.
