Kumar obtained his law degree from the University of London in 1982. He qualified as a Barrister-at-Law from Middle Temple, the UK, in 1983 and was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1984.
From 1990 until 2004, Kumar was a partner in Messrs Allen & Gledhill, and has remained one even after that firm merged with another law firm, to become what is now known as Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill.
He has been active in dispute resolution practice in the fields of general civil, commercial, banking and insolvency. He also advises on general corporate and commercial matters. He now heads the Banking & Insolvency Practice Group in the firm.
Kumar co-authored the Malaysian chapter of the book International Product Liability in 2004.
He served as a director of Interlaw (an international association of more than 80 premier independent law firms worldwide) from November 2001 until November 2007.
