The firm’s experienced commercial and technology team advises across a wide range of commercial transactions.

Real estate: the team (including construction, property litigation, planning and environment) has a wealth of experience dealing with developers, investors and lenders across a number of sectors including retail, office, residential, industrial, hotels and leisure, education, medical centres and nursing homes.

Commercial litigation: as one of the most well-recognised contentious law practices in the South East, the team has a wealth of experience in advising clients in the full range of corporate and commercial disputes. Dedicated teams manage disputes in relation to construction, employment, information technology, insolvency, insurance, intellectual property, professional indemnity, contentious trusts and probate, and real estate. In addition to handling High Court litigation and international arbitrations, we provide strategic advice in relation to claims management and avoidance.

Employment, immigration and pensions: the firm’s top-ranked team advises on all aspects of employment law and provides a full range of contentious and non-contentious employment services for employers, together with industrial relations advice. It also offers advice on immigration matters and in relation to pensions.

Private client: our experienced private client team advises on all aspects of private client matters including in relation to tax, trusts, estate planning, charities and family law – including capital tax planning, onshore and offshore trusts, planning for non-UK domiciliaries, estate administration, investment taxation, heritage property, landed estates and tax litigation. Much of our work has an international dimension and involves succession and trust based issues, as well as tax concerns.

We are committed to promoting an inclusive culture that encourages everyone to realise their full potential and be themselves at work, and through that approach, we believe, comes true teamwork and strength.

Diversity and inclusion (D&I) is a central tenet of our strategy and vision, examples of this include:

  • Our D&I forum, which is populated by people from across the business with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Our seven action groups cover:
    • LGBTQ+
    • Race and ethnicity
    • Mental health awareness
    • The Mindful Business Charter – which comprises a set of behavioural principles to help tackle and reduce unnecessary sources of stress while fostering improved mental health and well-being within the workplace, we are a signatory
    • Family and parenting, including our membership with The Miscarriage Association
    • Interlaw Diversity Forum (IDLF) – fostering inclusion for all diverse and under-represented talent working in the legal sector, we are the first firm outside London to sign up as a supporter
    • Women in the Law – promoting our involvement with this not-for-profit networking organisation which provides members with resources and events to encourage, inspire and support the next generation of lawyers and women in business
  • We are a member of The Law Society’s Diversity and Inclusion charter, a public commitment by legal practices to promote the values of diversity, equality and inclusion throughout their firm.
  • We are committed to attracting and recruiting a diverse workforce and to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where our people can thrive. We were the first firm outside of London to sign up to the Reignite Academy, which provides opportunities for lawyers to return to work after a career hiatus and helps clients source diverse talent.
  • A key diversity challenge for many large law firms is gender balance. At Stevens & Bolton, 42% of our partners are women (as a comparison, the UK law firm average is 27-33%). We also have a strong representation of women at board level and in other senior management positions. The results of our gender pay gap report compare favourably with other law firms. Key highlights include an 8.2% mean gender pay gap for employees, significantly lower than the national average of 14.9%. On a median level, the gap reduces to 0%.
