Insurance claims fraud.


Sarah joined BLM in 2006 and was made a partner in 2007. She is the strategic and operational partner responsible for the specialist fraud team in the Birmingham office and also responsible for BLM’s National Fraud Strategy. Sarah has 12 years’ experience managing fraudulent claims and her areas of specific expertise include all aspects of motor fraud; bogus passenger claims, staged/contrived accidents, semi-staged accidents, high-value exaggerated fraud cases, policyholder frauds and low-velocity claims. Sarah has acted for a number of top ten insurance companies and has led intelligence enquiries and coordinated investigations into large fraud rings. She frequently co-ordinates police complaints under the ACPO Guidelines for proven insurance frauds as well as liaising with the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s Fraud Intelligence Unit and the Serious Organised Crime Agency. Sarah also advises on current regulatory legislature which assists in the combating of fraud. Sarah’s accomplishments include acting on behalf of a client in Operation Genarch which has seen 27 criminal convictions for conspiracy to defraud following ‘cash-for-crash’ scams in the Liverpool area. Sentences handed down ranged from custodial sentences to fines and community orders.

BLM acts for tour operators, travel agents, insurers and excursion companies on complex, serious and catastrophic injury claims, and also handles group and class action cases. It is representing Thomas Cook in a large group a large group action involving allegations of a cryptosporidium outbreak; and the team was also involved in the first prosecution and criminal conviction of claimants who had pursued fundamentally dishonest travel sickness claims. Sandals, Jet2, Regis Mutual, Olympic Holidays, British Airways and Stena Line are clients. Matthew Ford has ‘good judgement’ and leads the leisure and travel casualty team. Leeds-based Arion Jones heads the tour operator liability team. In Bristol, Gemma Pearce is experienced in marine casualty and is noted for personal injury and fatal accident cases involving cargo ships, passenger ships, ports and terminals. Associate Deborah Sayers, who regularly acts for tour operators.  Birmingham-based Sarah Hill heads the fraud practice group.

Sarah Hill leads the practice and advised Thomas Cook on a number of fraudulent travel sickness claims from its customers. Simon Hammond is also a key figure, and recently assisted DLG with a motor accident claim and advised The National Express on a road traffic accident insurance claim.
