Kate has experience in a wide range of commercial disputes – with a focus on professional liability claims and banking and finance disputes. She has acted on a number of high profile complex cases, often with an international element.

Kate's work includes the Tchenguiz litigation – regarded as one of the most complex and high profile disputes before the English courts in recent times and acting in the leading case on the arguability of LIBOR manipulation against banks.

Her practice has particular focus on professional liability claims, having previously been seconded to the Risk Management team of one of the Big 4 firms. She has continued to represent them in various claims post-secondment.

She is regularly involved in banking and financial services litigation, acting in claims involving complex financial instruments. She also has experience of interlocutory and post judgment applications including freezing injunctions and receivership orders.

Stephenson Harwood has particular strengths in cross-border disputes in the energy, financial services, shipping, aviation, art and real estate sectors. Recent growth included the hiring of Justin McClelland, who is focused on contentious financial regulation, economic crime, and corporate investigations, from Winston & Strawn London LLP.  John Fordham heads the commercial litigation group; Richard Garcia has particular litigation expertise in relation to shareholders, partnership joint ventures, post-acquisition issues and corporate investments; meanwhile Sue Millar is particularly focused on the financial services and international trade sectors. Also highly rated are Edward Davis, Richard Gwynne, sports law group head Ben Sigler and Kate Cordery. Guy Harper was made partner in 2019, and Caroline Houghton and Alina Neal are the senior associates to note.

The team regularly handles negligence cases relating to regulatory and criminal investigations. Roland Foord, who heads the team with Stephen Roberts, led advice for National House-Building Council (NHBC) on a £41m claim against its former auditor and tax adviser, PwC. Kate Cordery is engaged on claims involving solicitors, tax advisors, accountants, auditors and professional services firms.

  • Companies should plan now to minimise their pension protection levy

    The amount that pension schemes have to pay to the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) for the year 2006/07 may have increased by as much as five times the previous year's levy. Employers who ultimately bear the cost of many pension schemes will need to make plans now to ensure the levy payable for the year 2008/09 is kept to a minimum.
