Position

Steven advises employers, contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers on a wide range of building and civil engineering matters, both domestically and internationally. He has wide experience of working on the various forms of standard conditions, such as JCT, ICE, NEC, MF/1, IChemE and FIDIC, as well as numerous bespoke forms of construction contract. Steven advises on the full scope of construction issues, ranging from procurement/contract strategies through to dispute avoidance/resolution. Before switching to law, Steven worked as a civil engineer for a major contractor. With this engineering background, Steven is able to liaise effectively and efficiently with both factual and expert witnesses on what can be technically complex cases. He writes regularly in the construction press and is named in ‘Legal Experts’ and ‘Who’s Who Legal’ for construction.

The ‘Very approachable, commercially astute, pragmatic and clear’ Steven Carey leads the construction team at Charles Russell Speechlys LLP. Fiona Edmond advises central London commercial developers on a wide range of construction projects and property transactions, including office and mixed-use developments, for both purchaser and vendor. Edmond also brings expertise in acting for data centre providers and landlords on the development of science parks. Recent work has ranged from projects as diverse as the Wembley National Stadium, the Opus Business Bay in Dubai and a mixed-use development in Ghana. Contentious clients include Derwent London PLC, Countryside Properties, Howard de Walden Estate and Crest Nicholson in the development sector; and Bouygues Construction, Thyssenkrupp Group, Permasteelisa Group, WS Atkins Plc, Ferrovial Aggroman, Mace Group, Tata Steel in international construction. Two senior associates were recently made up to partner: Rupa Lakha and Michael O’Connor, who is ‘very knowledgeable, commercial, collaborative and invests his time to get to know the business so that he can advise appropriately.’ On the non-contentious side, O’Connor has been advising the Dover Harbour Board on its £250m flagship redevelopment for the Port of Dover, consisting of a new cargo terminal, and new marina pier.
