SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan joined the kick-off activity of the Philippine Business for Social Progress’ (PBSP) annual “Ready for School” (RFS) campaign last May 26 at the Taguig National High School (TNHS) in New Lower Bicutan, Taguig City. SyCipLaw volunteers helped prepare the school in time for the opening of classes last June. The activities included repainting of school chairs and blackboards, covering of books, construction of reading nooks, and cleaning of classrooms.

According to SyCipLaw Human Resources Manager Araceli Bundoc, “Our employees are natural volunteers. I think it’s innate in them. That is what makes it more enriching when you’re not expecting anything in return.”

HR Supervisor Junhel Acedillo finds participating in the activity very fulfilling. “I am also a product of a public school and this is my way of giving back to the institutions that made me the person I am now… Volunteerism is something that everyone should engage in because an hour or two is already a big help.”

Now on its 11th year, RFS is a continuing support to the Department of Education’s “Brigada Eskwela” initiative. It has engaged more companies and employee-volunteers to participate in providing better learning experiences for students of over 300 schools nationwide.

Aside from SyCipLaw, other companies that joined the initiative include Accenture, Inc.; Deloitte Philippines, ePLDT; Philippine Daily Inquirer; Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation; Medicard Philippines, Inc.; PLDT Inc.; TSM Group, Inc.; The Net Group; and Singko Corp. (Potato Corp.). In-kind and cash donations were also provided by Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines, Inc. and the Philippine Stock Exchange.

RFS began in 2007 as PBSP’s campaign to generate funds among member-companies and partners for the purchase of books, school supplies, bags, food products, and classroom cleaning materials for public school students in the country. With the support of member-companies and partners, PBSP also provides public schools with learning resource centers, scholarships, in-school supplemental feeding, as well as training for teachers and school administrators.
