Position

Mr. Castillo specializes in banking, labor law, corporate law, maritime law, insurance, international trade, litigation, and arbitration. He is an arbitrator accredited with Philippine Dispute Resolution Center, Inc. (PDRCI).

He won several landmark cases before the Supreme Court, namely, on arbitration (National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburge, PA/American International Underwriter (Phil.) Inc. vs. Stolt-Nielsen Philippines, Inc. (184 SCRA 682), on admiralty (Aboitiz Shipping Corporation vs General Accident Fire and Life Assurance Corporation, Ltd. (217 SCRA 359), and on international commercial law and practice (United States Lines, Inc. vs Commissioner of Customs (151 SCRA 189)).

Career

Mr. Castillo was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 1977 and became a Partner of SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan in 1988.

He was a foreign attorney with the San Francisco law firm of Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe (1982) and with the London firm of Sinclair Roche and Temperley (1983).

From 2011 to 2016, Mr. Castillo conducted Supreme Court-accredited seminars on “Best Practices in Handling Customs Tax Audits & Remedies”. He authored “Movement of Goods, Transport and Shipping – Laws Relating to Inward and Outward Transport” published by the CCH (USA). He also contributed the Philippine sections of Kluwer Law International BV, Netherland’s Maritime Law Handbook in 2011 and from 2013 to 2015.

He was president of the Maritime Law Association of the Philippines (1995) and was chairman of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association’s Committees on Maritime Law and Aviation Law.

Mr. Castillo is a member of the Philippine Bar Association, Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Maritime Law Association of the Philippines, Inter-Pacific Bar Association and the Asean Law Association and the Order of the Purple Feather (Honor Society of the U.P. College of Law).

Education

Mr. Castillo has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree and a Bachelor of Laws (Ll.B.) degree from the University of the Philippines in 1973 and 1977, respectively. He holds a Master of Laws (Ll.M.) from New York University (1981) and obtained in 1982 a Certificate in Advanced Commercial Law (with distinction) from the City of London Polytechnic (United Kingdom).
