Mia G. Gentugaya is an of counsel in SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan. She specializes in banking, finance and securities, foreign investments, and corporations.

She was an active member of the debt restructuring team of SyCipLaw, which acted as counsel to the Bank Advisory committee for the duration of the Philippine debt restructuring program from 1984 until its completion in 1992. She has also acted as counsel to foreign and local banks which financed flagship projects of the Philippines, including the Leyte geothermal plants and the Metro Manila Skyway.

She has structured, negotiated and documented credit transactions in local and foreign currencies for Philippine and offshore banking institutions. She has substantial involvement in aircraft financing, ship financing, and project financing.

Ms. Gentugaya acts as legal counsel to Philippine banks, foreign banks with branches in the Philippines and foreign financial institutions in connection with loans, bonds, equity and debt security issues, as well as derivative transactions. She also advises foreign investors in setting up business in the Philippines, and serves in the Board of Directors of various corporations.


Ms. Gentugaya joined the firm in 1977 as an associate.

She has been cited as one of the leading lawyers in project finance in the 1996 Guide to the World’s Leading Project Finance Lawyers, AsiaLaw Profiles (1997), the International Financial Law Review’s Guide to the World’s International Business Law Firms (1997), the Asia Pacific Legal 500 (1998-1999), among others.

She has delivered lectures and papers in New York; Washington, DC; Paris; Singapore; and Hong Kong on a variety of topics, including insolvency, preference of credits, security arrangements, and foreign exchange regulations, as well as mutual funds and ship financing. She was a lecturer for the Banks Administration Institute and has assisted in the formulation of various seminars for the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines.


She is a member of the International Bar Association, Maritime Law Association of the Philippines (charter member, trustee, 1988-1989), Philippine Bar Association, Women Lawyers Circle, and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.


Ms. Gentugaya completed her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (1972) and Bachelor of Laws (1977) at the University of the Philippines. She was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 1978.

It is adept at handling cases of secured and Export Credit Agency-guaranteed acquisitions of aircraft and engine leases. Other areas of expertise include registration and de-registration of aircraft.
