Robert is a contentious financial markets litigation specialist of over 20 years’ experience and is recognised as one of the leading practitioners in the field. Robert heads the firm’s International Financial Markets Litigation practice which includes: asset management disputes; structured products and derivatives disputes; contentious regulatory and investigations; and exchange based product and commodities disputes.


Qualified into litigation department Simmons & Simmons 1993; secondment with BZW and a major international investment bank (focused on non-contentious derivatives work); partner 2001; head of international finance litigation group.

Simmons & Simmons' practice 'has excellent industry-leading knowledge'. It is focused exclusively on contentious work for financial institutions, asset managers and hedge funds, and combines expertise in financial markets litigation, investigations, and financial crime. The commercial litigation team has expertise in complex contractual, boardroom and joint venture disputes that are often cross-border. UK dispute resolution practice head Ian Hammond  defended a £1.5bn claim against Grant Thornton, brought by Robert Tchenguiz, which alleged conspiracy with the Serious Fraud Office in relation to an investigation into the Tchenguiz brothers and their roles in Kaupthing Bank's collapse.  Senior partner Colin Passmore is a privilege expert  who has maintained a litigation practice alongside his management role and Patrick Boylan specialises in high-value commercial and fraud disputes. Other key advisers are Ed Crosse, Robert Turner, and managing associates Paolo Caldato and Kirsten Kitt. Chris Owen was promoted to partner.

  • Failure to counter financial crime: Norwich Union Life

    In December 2007, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) imposed a fine of £1.26m on Norwich Union Life (part of the Aviva Group), one of the largest life insurance businesses in the UK with around seven million customers. The fine related to failures to take reasonable care to establish and maintain effective systems and controls for countering the risks of financial crime. The fine is the latest confirmation of the emphasis being placed on protecting clients and customers from the threat of financial crime.
