Failure to counter financial crime: Norwich Union Life

In December 2007, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) imposed a fine of £1.26m on Norwich Union Life (part of the Aviva Group), one of the largest life insurance businesses in the UK with around seven million customers. The fine related to failures to take reasonable care to establish and maintain effective systems and controls for countering the risks of financial crime. The fine is the latest confirmation of the emphasis being placed on protecting clients and customers from the threat of financial crime.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the indemnity for protection against dismissal for employee representatives can be cumulated with an indemnity for employment security which is due on the basis of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) concluded at the level of a branch of industry.

New act on lease of movable property?

In November 2007, Bertil Bengtsson was appointed to make an examination concerning the Consumer Services Act. In the memorandum he presented in conjunction with that examination, he concluded that the Consumer Services Act should not contain any rules on lease of movable property since lease of movable property does not legally constitute a service.
