Career

Ahmad has acted for clients from diverse countries in their family disputes involving cross-border disputes on children and matrimonial assets. His probate experiences span various international jurisdictions. He has represented clients facing the death penalty. He is the current Chairman of the Muslim Law Practice Committee of the Law Society and deals with Family Law and Probate work in both the Civil Law and Syariah Law systems. He was a member of the Law Society’s team which participated in the Parliamentary Select Committee Hearing on the amendments to the Administration of Muslim Law Act back in 1997. In 2012, his paper on ‘The Islamic Legal System in Singapore’ was published in the Pacific Rim Law & Policy Journal of the University of Washington.

On December 2009, he was appointed by the President of the Republic of Singapore to sit on the Panel of Advisers of the Juvenile Court. Since May 2010, he has been an Associate Mediator of the Singapore Mediation Centre. On October 2011, he was appointed to be on the Advisory Panel of Maintenance Support Central, established by the Singapore Council of Women’s Organizations (SCWO).

Ahmad’s passion for knowledge and teaching is manifested in him being appointed a Teaching Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Legal Education. His zest of learning is also reflected in him undergoing the first–ever Masters of Law programme at the Singapore Management University (SMU) in 2012, with a specialization in Islamic Finance.

He has been invited by esteemed organizations to deliver talks at various events, both local and overseas , and these include:

  • National University of Singapore and the Singapore Academy of Law conference on “Current Issues in Private Client Business: Wills, Wealth Planning & Succession” (21 November 2011)
  • Law Society of Singapore seminar and conference on “ Inaugural CPD Day: 2011 Developments in a Nutshell for Busy Practitioners” (14 November 2011)
  • Asia Research Institute and the Singapore Faculty of Law workshop on “Creating Islamic Lawyers and Judges” (5 February 2009)

Ahmad has held leadership positions as the Chairman of TRANS Centre and President of Mendaki Club. His versatility is also manifested in him being a Board member of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore between 2002 and 2005 , a Council member of the statutory board MUIS (The Islamic Religious Authority of Singapore), as well as the Supervisory Panel of REACH. He currently sits on the Board of Governors at the Nanyang Polytechnic (NP).

In August 2011, Ahmad was appointed to sit on the Board of Mediacorp where he is also a member of the Audit and Review Committee. Prior to that, he served for almost a decade on the Programme Advisory Committees (English and Malay) at the Media Development Authority and was a member of the Censorship Review Committee 2003.

Ahmad has long been active in community and social work, with diverse organizations such as Central Singapore CDC, Feedback Unit, National Youth Council, Singapore International Foundation, the Education Trust Fund ( ETF) , to name a few . He received the PBM (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat – Public Service Medal) from the President during the 2007 National Day Awards

Ahmad Nizam Abbas was called to the Bar of Lincoln’s Inn in UK in July 1992 and was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in January 1994.

Other strengths of the practice include white-collar criminal defence, construction disputes and medical malpractice work. Chan Lai Foong and Ahmad Nizam Abbas were promoted to director.
