Areas of practice

The firm’s dispute resolution practice comprises arbitration, commercial litigation and criminal and regulatory litigation. Dispute resolution is Straits Law’s largest practice area. Its partners have extensive arbitration and court experience at all levels, trial and Court of Appeal expertise, and specific expertise in all major areas of litigation.

The managing director, N. Sreenivasan SC, and Valerie Ang are the lead partners in the arbitration practice which has successfully acted in arbitrations in Singapore, Myanmar and the United States in diverse fields, from trade finance disputes to commodities-related disputes, hospitality disputes between owners and managers/operators; and a wide range of international trade disputes. Recent successes for the firm include successfully representing a large investment holding company in Myanmar in a major international arbitration with a Singapore listed company in a dispute (worth more than $200m) over a major share acquisition.

The commercial litigation practice group, headed by N. Sreenivasan SC, has extensive experience in major shareholders disputes, fraud claims, contractual and employment disputes. Palaniappan Sundararaj, a leading medical malpractice litigator, works with experts from all over the world, to marry the depth of medical knowledge with cutting edge litigation expertise; thus bringing to the table one of the foremost medical malpractice teams in Singapore. Important recent cases include acting for the plaintiff in the Court of Appeal in ACB v Thomson Medical Pte Ltd involving the novel issue as to whether child-rearing costs can be awarded in wrongful birth cases in Singapore.

Straits Law’s criminal and regulatory litigation practice, headed by N. Sreenivasan SC, is a leading practice, particularly for its defence work in high-value white-collar crime cases. A notable case involves the sum of $24m in relation to a mega-church in Singapore.

Joseph Liow leads the building and construction practice group, which works closely with industry professionals such as engineers, architects, civil and structural engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers, quantity surveyors and other experts.

Straits Law’s insolvency practice group, headed by N. Sreenivasan SC and Valerie Ang, has recently acted for a major Indonesian coal supplier in a $950m debt restructuring, and for liquidators in relation to a major motion picture production house.

The firm’s banking litigation practice, led by Palaniappan Sundararaj, recently acted for a major European bank in a claim brought by a BVI company in respect of accumulator share transactions entered into prior to the GFC.

Palaniappan Sundararaj and M Rama lead the insurance litigation practice group, advising on general insurance cases, workplace injury, fire, public and product liability, inland transit, travel and professional indemnity matters.

Joseph Liow and Valerie Ang lead the employment practice group. The firm has conducted or been involved in facilitating company directed inquiries into employees’ misconduct, breach of confidentiality obligations, breach of legislation and regulations; and regularly collaborates with HR departments in relation to compliance with internal policies, local legislation and regulations.

The matrimonial and probate practice group, which covers Syariah law matters, is headed by Stuart A. Palmer. The team advises clients on matters ranging from prenuptial agreements, maintenance for children and spouses, separation, divorce, custody of children and division of matrimonial assets. Recent successes include a divorce involving matrimonial assets in excess of $100 million.
