Areas of practice

Litigation and dispute resolution: the practice is headed by N Sreenivasan SC. The partners have expertise in specific practice areas, offering quality counsel to lead cases in commercial litigation, corporate and banking/financial litigation, criminal law, medical and professional negligence, shareholder disputes, insolvency and restructuring, construction, real estate, employment and others. Sreeni handles high-value commercial disputes, complex corporate litigation, arbitration and white-collar crime cases. S Balamurugan, who runs the firm’s criminal practice, often assists Sreeni in complex criminal matters.

Arbitration: Valerie Ang leads the arbitration practice, with Shankar AS. The arbitration team has successfully conducted arbitrations in Singapore, Myanmar and the US in diverse fields, from trade finance disputes to commodities-related disputes, hospitality disputes, construction disputes and multi-million dollar arbitrations.

Banking and finance: led by executive chairman, M Rajaram, the practice works with the majority of Indian banks with a presence in Singapore. Besides having experience in structuring syndications and project financing within Singapore and around the world, Straits Law also has experience in advising financial institutions and foreign banks on regulatory and licensing matters. Ahmad Khalis brings specialised Islamic banking knowledge and a good grounding in general banking law to the table.

Corporate and real estate: led by Chan Lai Foong, the practice’s key strength is their substantial experience and expertise in domestic and cross-border transactions and can effectively manage the substantial complexities of a multi-jurisdictional M&A deal (with local real estate knowledge).

Building and construction: Straits Law’s building and construction law practice provides advisory services and manages disputes for clients. The team is headed by Joseph Liow who has represented a wide range of clients in the industry, including the Building Control Authority of Singapore, developers, main contractors, suppliers and sub-contractors. It is well placed to manage and assist clients in adjudication matters under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act.

Employment: Joseph Liow and Valerie Ang lead the practice. It has conducted/been involved in facilitating company-directed inquiries into employees’ misconduct, breach of confidentiality obligations, breach of legislation and regulations; and regularly collaborates with HR departments on compliance with internal policies, local legislation and regulations.

India practice: led by M Rajaram, the India practice actively advises clients in Singapore and in the region who are looking towards India to further their business interests and clients from India who are looking to do business in Singapore and the region.

Matrimonial and probate: the matrimonial and probate practice, including Syariah law matters, is headed by Stuart Palmer and Ahmad Nizam. It advises clients on matters ranging from prenuptial agreements, maintenance for children and wife, separation, divorce, custody of children and division of matrimonial assets and in cross-border custody disputes. It has acted in high-value matrimonial assets cases and complex mixed religious matrimonial cases.

Restructuring and insolvency: Straits Law’s insolvency practice is headed by Muralli Rajaram. It has developed a strong practice having acted for a wide variety of clients including liquidators or creditors looking to swell the pool of assets or debtors hoping to restructure.

Tort, medical negligence, insurance and professional liability: Straits Law is one of Singapore’s leading medical malpractice firms. Led by Palaniappan Sundararaj, the team marries depth of medical knowledge with cutting-edge litigation expertise to form one of the foremost medical malpractice teams in Singapore. The practice has extensive experience in the defence and recovery of personal and non-personal insurance claims such as motor and personal injury liabilities, medical and health insurance policies, performance bond and indemnity and business interruption policies.
