Heather is a Pensions partner, undertaking pensions advisory work for a number of scheme trustees and employers, trustee training, corporate support transactional advice, regulatory compliance (Pensions Act 1995, Pensions Act 2004 and Finance Act 2004), Pension Ombudsman complaints, clearance statements applications, liability reduction exercises, drafting of trust deed and rules and interpretation of governing documentation, PFI outsourcing support, Housing Association pension advice, parent company guarantees, letters of credit and other contingent asset agreements relating to pension protection fund levy reduction, scheme buy-outs and buy-ins, as well as scheme mergers, employer debt section 75 advice, Auto enrolment compliance, scheme equalisation and general compliance with anti-discriminatory legislation. Heather is also a trustee, a member of a pension scheme governance committee and runs the team’s trustee secretarial services practice.

At Shoosmiths LLP, ‘advice is always given with the wider commercial context in mind’. The team is experienced in a range of employment work as well as business immigration matters. Jonathan Naylor leads the Reading practice and advises on a full range of contentious and non-contentious employment issues; recently he successfully had claims against client Wilson James for unfair dismissal and discrimination dismissed on all grounds as completely unfounded. National department head Kevin McCavish has particular expertise in the financial services sector and also acts for international companies, being the client partner for Fisher-Price, HiT Entertainment and Calor Gas, among others. McCavish and pensions partner Heather Chandler acted for The National Trust on its re-acquisition of Shugborough Hall, which involved negotiating the terms of transfer relating to employees, collective consultation with employee representatives, individual consultation with employees and ultimately their hiring or dismissal. Paula Rome is highly regarded for CAC hearings, high-profile exits, non-contentious trade union work and employment work related to corporate deals. Clients also include Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Old Mutual Global Investors and the Open University.

The ‘efficient pensions team’ at Shoosmiths LLP is headed nationally by ‘outstanding lawyer’ David Thompson, who is ‘technically and intellectually very strong’, with ‘a very good client manner’. Thompson and associate Kunjan Sembhi advised the One Ecolab Pension Plan Trustee on a merger of the sectionalised scheme of a new section comprising deferred benefits from an overseas plan, among other items. The firm’s Milton Keynes pensions team is led by Heather Chandler, who is ‘very approachable, experienced, understands trustees' concerns and addresses queries raised in a very effective manner and timescale’. Chandler provides advice on an ongoing basis to the Trustees of the Inmarsat Pension Plan. The pensions teams in the Reading and Solent offices are led by Suzanne Burrell and Tracey Hemingway respectively.
