Jim is a partner and heads Shoosmiths’ unsecured lending litigation and recoveries unit, which forms part of Shoosmiths' Recoveries Services Group. The unit is 60-strong and acts for a wide range of lenders (including retail banks, building societies and credit card issuers) and debt purchasers, providing debt recovery litigation services for unsecured lending, including complex and technical issues arising from such lending, in particular, issues arising under consumer credit legislation and PPI mis-selling. Jim provides strategic advice to those lenders and debt purchasers on debt recovery strategies and compliance with regulatory requirements. He also provides advice to lenders on general banking litigation, lending and security issues, having 17 years' experience in the industry.

Shoosmiths LLP stands out for the scale of its debt recovery offering, with its East Midlands team forming part of a large national UK group. It is one of a small number of law firms in the UK to be authorised by the FCA to undertake regulated activities, including debt administration and debt collection. In Northampton, Jim Taylor leads the consumer finance litigation and recoveries department, which covers the full spectrum of secured and unsecured lending matters for banks, building societies, debt purchasers and other creditors across the UK. Lisa Keating is also active in this area. Mel Chell heads up the national motor and asset finance recoveries group, and has specialist expertise in matters involving fraud and injunctive relief, and high-value assets. Stuart Montgomery is the head of the secured and commercial recoveries team.

Housed within the firm's risk and litigation services department, the 'client-centric' debt recovery team at Shoosmiths LLP is instructed by clients throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. The group is able to handle cross-jurisdictional matters, with services including unsecured and secured consumer and corporate lending recoveries, asset-based and invoice finance lending recoveries and trade debt commercial recoveries; drawing on Financial Conduct Authority permissions for debt administration, collection and mortgage administration. The national group is jointly led by Jim Taylor, Melanie Chell, Paula Swain, Rod Macphail, Jason Byrne and Gillian Crotty.
