Career

​​​​​Rob advises on employment agreements, employment aspects of commercial transactions, dismissals, discrimination, redundancy, restraint of trade and labour disputes. He is a trained mediator.

His clients include leading corporates such as Rank Group, Goodman Fielder, Asahi, AT&T, Compass Group, JPMorgan Chase, Fairfax Media, Hewlett-Packard, Frucor, Lyttelton Port Company, Tainui Group Holdings and Sime Darby.

He is a part-time lecturer in employment law at the University of Auckland and regularly speaks at employment law seminars and conferences. Rob is the author of the New Zealand chapter in five international textbooks on employment law.

Towner, key partner Tim Clarke and senior associate Liz Coats recently acted for Lyttelton Port Company, which operates one of the country’s major ports, in litigation arising from collective bargaining with the Maritime Union and the Rail and Maritime Transport Union. Senior associate Rosemary Wooders, who joined the Auckland office from Macfarlanes LLP in London, has extensive experience in both advisory and contentious matters, including collective bargaining and restraints of trade.
