Nagarajah Muttiah joined the firm in 1980 as an associate and currently assumes the position of Shook Lin & Bok’s Managing Partner. He heads 3 departments, namely, the General & Civil Litigation Department, the Insurance, Shipping & Aviation Department and the International and Domestic Arbitration Department. Nagarajah has represented for clients in litigation matters at both the trial courts as well as the appellate courts, often acting as lead counsel appearing before the Court of Appeal and Federal Court. Over the years in litigation practice, Nagarajah has advised clients in the capacities of private individuals and major corporations alike from tortuous claims such as defamation and air disaster claims to corporate matters involving shareholder disputes, cross-border disputes, corporate insolvency, dispute on the breach of trusts and tracing. Though his experience cuts across all aspects of the law, Nagarajah found a passion for the area of shipping and admiralty law with a specialization in insurance law. He authored the Malaysian chapter to the 2nd Edition of William Tetley’s Maritime Liens and Claims and was the founder and the immediate Past President of the Malaysian Maritime Law Association (MMLA). Known for his work in the insurance industry, Nagarajah and his team of lawyers regularly handle complex insurance and reinsurance disputes. Recently, Nagarajah and his team led negotiations on behalf of a leading Malaysian insurer with a leading reinsurer from the Middle East and the Labuan Offshore Financial Services Authority of Malaysia (LOFSA), which finally culminated in a landmark out-of-court settlement agreement between the parties premised on commutation clauses found in the motor quota share treaties. In pursuit of his true passion, Nagarajah also conducts training and seminars to in-house legal counsel to share knowledge and insights on the subject of insurance and reinsurance laws.


Nagarajah Muttiah joined the firm in 1980 as an associate. He became a partner in 1989 and currently holds the position of Deputy Managing Partner.

Shook Lin & Bok gains recognition for its ‘pragmatic advice paired with deep-knowledge of the sector’. The ‘vastly experienced team’ acts for clients in complex related civil disputes, banking and finance claims, and international arbitration. Yoong Sin Min led in the representation of Maybank and others, as the noteholders, in a dispute concerning the interpretation of terms contained in a trust deed, with a total value of close to RM327m. It is acting for Public Bank (the defendant) in a case concerning banks’ duty of secrecy and confidentiality, with a value claim of RM350m. Nagarajah Muttiah, Romesh Abraham, Lam Ko Luen, Sudharsanan Thillainathan and Chan Kok Keong are all notable practitioners.
