Position

Sarjit is the Senior Partner of Shook Lin & Bok LLP. He has extensive experience in a broad range of litigation and arbitration matters, with a special focus on corporate and commercial disputes, banking-related disputes, shareholders’ disputes, professional negligence and fraud. He also has an active international arbitration practice, having been involved in a significant number of complex arbitrations in Singapore and abroad. Notably, Sarjit has acted both for and against Indian parties in international arbitration matters.

With more than 30 years of experience, Sarjit is also involved in many domestic and cross-border restructuring and insolvency matters, some of which are significant and high profile in nature. His clients include insolvency practitioners (liquidators, judicial managers, administrators, etc), accounting firms, financial institutions and non-bank creditors.

Sarjit has served on the Board of the Central Provident Fund from 2012 to 2018. He is a member of the Life Imprisonment Review Board, The President's Pleasure Review Board and Long Imprisonment Review Board. He has, more recently, also been appointed to be a member of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) Panel of Arbitrators.

It acted for the receivers, FTI, in a case against the promoters of a resort in Thailand, with proceedings taking place in Singapore and involving an anti-suit injunction to prevent the promoters from pursuing their claim in Thailand. Sarjit Singh Gill SC, Probin Dass, Joseph Tay and David Chan are key members of the team.

Following its work representing the family of an older person suffering from mental incapacity in a case that went to the Court of Appeal concerning the application of aspects of the Mental Capacity Act, the team is now handling an appeal in respect of various costs issues. It also acted for a client in respect of cross-border tracing and investigations into a multimillion-dollar commercial fraud spanning numerous jurisdictions.

The team has had a role in a number of significant cases, particularly in the energy and marine sectors and in Chapter 11 filings. Sarjit Singh Gill SC, who has many years of experience in domestic and cross border insolvencies and restructurings, heads the team. Debby Lim has, according to one client, 'a perfect record in achieving successful and often ground-breaking outcomes'. She acted for the liquidators of a Singapore shipping company that was part of an Indian conglomerate in filing an application in the High Court to void a lien over sub-freight under the Companies Act. The matter eventually went to the Court of Appeal for it to consider the interplay between shipping practice and insolvency law. David Chan is also noted for his skills in this area as well as his wider litigation and arbitration expertise.
