Drew & Napier LLC sets up new Pro Bono Department

01 February 2012 - Drew & Napier LLC ("Drew & Napier") has set up a Pro Bono Department with effect from 1 February 2012. The Pro Bono Department is expected to harness the expertise of Drew & Napier's lawyers who will provide legal services to pro bono clients on an ad-hoc basis.

The Pro Bono Department will be led by Mr Tony Yeo and Mr Petrus Huang, who are both directors of the firm and is supported by an administrator and by members of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee and other volunteer lawyers.

The Pro Bono Department was set up following the recent exhortation by the Chief Justice in his Opening of the Legal Year 2012 speech, calling for larger law firms in Singapore to set up pro bono departments in order to give back to the needy in our society. The firm has also adopted the suggestion by the Chief Justice to law firms to recognize the pro bono effort of their lawyers by crediting their pro bono work with a financial incentive.

Bad faith established

In P.T. Swakarya Indah Busana v Haniffa Pte Ltd and another [2012] SGHC 69, the Plaintiff sought to invalidate the Defendants’ 15 “Martin” formative trade marks (“the Challenged marks”) on grounds that the marks were registered in bad faith (section 7(6) read with section 23(1) of the Trade Marks Act (the “Act”), and that there was fraud in the registrations or the registrations were obtained by misrepresentation (section 23(4) of the Act).
