Career

Ann Nam-Yeon Kwon is a senior trademark attorney at Kim & Chang. She is a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property, Trademark, Copyright, and Design Practices.

Ms. Kwon has managed and advised on a vast number of trademark portfolios for various global and international companies for 27 years.

She is an energetic and effective leader who creates a working environment in which her teams can develop and produce winning results.

She provides creative strategies for her clients, and in doing so, is a pioneer in her field, contributing in the development of new case law and enforcing her clients’ intellectual property rights in Korea.

She has a deep and thorough understanding of her clients’ various businesses and industries, which allows her to provide practical advice.

In addition, she is active in various IP related organizations such as KOTA and AIPPI in Korea. She frequently submits opinions and participates as a board member of such organizations.

Ms. Kwon was a member of the Korean Intellectual Property Office’s Geographical Indications Protection Strategy Committee in 2002 and Committee on Amendments to the Trademark and Design Acts in 2000. Additionally, Ms. Kwon was a member of the Anti-Counterfeiting Committee of the Asia Patent Attorney Association from 2003 to 2009. She is currently a director of board for the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property and also a member of the Korean Trademark and Design Association.

Ms. Kwon has also participated in the Committee on Amendment to the Trademark and Design Acts and the Geographical Indications Protection Strategy Committee of the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

In addition, Ms. Kwon was a guest speaker at the International Trademark Association’s Anti-counterfeiting Conference in Hong Kong. To highlight some of her accomplishments, Ms. Kwon was honored as a leading lawyer in Intellectual Property from both Practical Law Company Which lawyer and Asialaw, and won an individual award from World Trademark Review 1000. She was also recognized as a leading lawyer in Enforcement & Litigation and Anti-counterfeiting by World Trademark Review and a Leading Trademark Practitioner by Guide to the World’s Leading Women in Business Law.

She has co-authored various publications, including “Hermès Successfully Protects Rights in Design of Birkin and Kelly Bags” (World Trademark Review Daily) and “Recent Patent Court Judgments on the Similarity of Trademarks as a Whole” (IP Review).

Ms. Kwon received her B.A. in English Literature from Yonsei University in 1987 and was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1995. She is admitted to the Korean Patent Bar.

Jay Young-June Yang leads Kim & Chang’s substantial and prominent IP practice, which remains the ‘top-choice’ for international pharmaceutical companies and international brands; the practice is well known for its strength in litigation and in a recent landmark case, Bo Hyun Park and Duck Soon Chang successfully defended Astellas Pharma against challenges to the patent term extension, the first Korean case in which the court issued specific guidance regarding the proper calculation method for determining the PTE term. Young Kim has an impressive track record in pharmaceutical patent litigation; she and Yu-Seog Won have defended one of Pfizer’s top-selling drugs, Lyrica, in various patent actions against generic companies. Sang-Wook Han is experienced in advising Japanese clients. For trade mark and design matters, Sung-Nam Kim, Ann Nam-Yeon Kwon, Angela Kim and John J Kim all have substantial experience in prosecution, enforcement and portfolio management. In patent litigation, Jong Seok Kim, Bong Seop Kim and Kum Uk Lee successfully represented AT Solutions in invalidating the patents of a competitor.
