Career

Sang-Wook Han is an attorney in the firm's Intellectual Property Practice and Japan Practice.

Since joining the firm in 1991, Mr. Han's practice has focused on domestic and international IP-related disputes. Mr. Han also counsels major multinational Japanese companies on a multitude of issues, ranging from strategic client counseling to IP portfolio management. For nearly two decades, Mr. Han has advised multinational companies in the areas of evolving technology, Internet, patents, trademarks and copyrights, as well as complex litigation.

In addition to domestic litigation, Mr. Han's representative work in recent years have become broader in scope as he has widened his experience in intellectual property litigation in several other regions, such as the US, Japan and Europe. Especially, Mr. Han has been involved in various patent disputes and litigations in multiple jurisdictions and has direct experience in handling various cases in the courts of the US, Japan and Europe.

As a member of the firm's Japan Practice, Mr. Han expanded his ties with several major Japanese companies through his work experience at major Japanese law firms, including Matsuo & Kosugi (1991), Nakamura & Partner (1995) and Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu (1997). In addition, he developed his expertise on Japanese companies and their legal practice by specializing in intellectual property at Tokyo University (1997-98).

Over the years, Mr. Han has been selected to give presentations on Korean IP law and related dispute resolution matters in seminars worldwide. Mr. Han has also been involved in the official Korean translation of Patent Laws, a Japanese-language authoritative publication on Japanese patent law authored by Professor Nakayama at Tokyo University. Mr. Han, with Professor Nakayama, also co-authored a book titled “Future of IPR,” which was published in Japanese and Korean in 2011. Mr. Han has also been involved in IP promotion activities as an IP expert in associations such as committees of the National Assembly and the National IP Committee. He is also serving as a president of Korean IP Lawyers’ Association.

Jay Young-June Yang leads Kim & Chang’s substantial and prominent IP practice, which remains the ‘top-choice’ for international pharmaceutical companies and international brands; the practice is well known for its strength in litigation and in a recent landmark case, Bo Hyun Park and Duck Soon Chang successfully defended Astellas Pharma against challenges to the patent term extension, the first Korean case in which the court issued specific guidance regarding the proper calculation method for determining the PTE term. Young Kim has an impressive track record in pharmaceutical patent litigation; she and Yu-Seog Won have defended one of Pfizer’s top-selling drugs, Lyrica, in various patent actions against generic companies. Sang-Wook Han is experienced in advising Japanese clients. For trade mark and design matters, Sung-Nam Kim, Ann Nam-Yeon Kwon, Angela Kim and John J Kim all have substantial experience in prosecution, enforcement and portfolio management. In patent litigation, Jong Seok Kim, Bong Seop Kim and Kum Uk Lee successfully represented AT Solutions in invalidating the patents of a competitor.
