Career

Kay-Jannes Wegner is a senior member of Kim & Chang’s International Arbitration & Cross-Border Litigation Practice and Construction & Engineering Disputes Practice, and is leading Kim & Chang’s European Arbitration Desk. He is appointed as Trustee to the Board of Directors of the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea.

Mr. Wegner represents clients in international arbitration disputes arising out of wide ranging subject matters including construction, power projects, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and joint ventures and has experience sitting as arbitrator in international disputes. He has working experience in the Middle East and in South East Asia.

Mr. Wegner is German and English qualified and appointed to the KCAB and the SHIAC panel of international arbitrators as well as to the HKIAC list of Arbitrators. He is appointed to the KCAB’s Council for International Arbitration. In March 2017, he was awarded a Commendation by the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Korea in recognition of his service to the promotion of the arbitration industry in Korea.

Mr. Wegner is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and President of the Korea chapter. Mr. Wegner is a member of the ITA Board of country reporters as a reporter for Korea and contributes summaries of Korean court decisions and other developments that are published on Kluwer Arbitration. He is recognised as a leading professional in industry magazines including Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners.

Prior to joining Kim & Chang, Mr. Wegner practiced international arbitration at leading firms both in London and Singapore.

Korean heavyweight Kim & Chang’s Seoul office handles work not just in engineering, but also concerning M&A disputes, global projects and investment disputes. Chul-Won Lee is representing a Korean shipyard in a $500m dispute with an offshore drilling contractor, with other key lawyers in the team including Byung-Chol Yoon and Eun Young Park. Kim & Chang ‘consistently delivers an extremely high level of service' in the most complex international disputes, particularly within M&A, construction and shipping sectors. The practice jointly led by Byung-Chol Yoon  and Eun Young Park; Yoon ‘manages the client interface and client meetings very well’ and is highly experienced in cross-border disputes; he and Sungjean Seo successfully defended a Korean shipbuilder in a London-based ad hoc arbitration. Meanwhile, Park, Byung-Woo Im and Joel Richardson represented the claimant, a Korean subsidiary of a French industrial gases supplier, in ICC arbitration over the termination of a supply agreement. Kay-Jannes Wegner is ‘one of the best advocates in Korea’; he regularly acts in cases involving European interests. Richard Menard and Chul-Won Lee are also recommended. Liz Kyo-Hwa Chung has joined Microsoft Korea as head of corporate, external and legal affairs.
