Litigation boutique Saunders Lawhas a burgeoning reputation’ in claims concerning judicial reviews, inquests and public inquiries as well as cases against the police and other detaining authorities. Practice head Nia Williams ‘truly cares about her clients’, standing out for her work with vulnerable clients in diverse mandates, including breaches to the Human Rights Act. Families of those who died in the Hillsborough disaster have retained Williams in bringing a misfeasance claim against the police for allegedly attempting to absolve West Midlands Police South Yorkshire Police of responsibility for their part in the tragedy. Two high-profile individuals, who are core participants in the Undercover Policing Inquiry, have instructed the practice in relation to violations of legal professional privilege and access to justice, which allegedly took place following surveillance that was undertaken by the police concerning the individual’s profession as lawyers. In addition to this, the practice has been acting for the family of Terry Smith in an inquest into his death; the Independent Police Complaints Commission has referred the case to the Crown Prosecution Service for the consideration of charging police officers with manslaughter and misconduct offences. ‘Determined and clever’ solicitor Ruth Mellor is the other key figure, ‘who is developing outstanding experience’ in filing actions against state authorities, including the Home Office and NHS Trusts.
