Position

Michael Goldberg is a partner in the corporate department of SJ Berwin LLP. Michael qualified in 1990 and SJ Berwin LLP in 1994. He was made a partner in 1997. Michael advises on a broad range of M&A transactions, including IPOs, joint ventures and acquisitions and disposals. He is particularly active in the real estate sector. Michael’s clients include British Land, Westfield, Delancey, Colliers CRE, Wichford, Brixton, Prestbury, Brockton Capital, Buckingham Securities, First Calgary Petroleums and Ticketmaster. Michael recently advised Royal Bank of Scotland on the sale of 25 Canada Square, Canary Wharf for £1bn. This was reported as the second-largest ever single property acquisition in the UK and, along with the purchase of the Meadowhall Shopping Centre by British Land for over £1bn, means that Michael has advised on two of the three largest-ever single property transactions in the UK. Other transactions Michael has led recently include advising Westfield on its £1.05bn joint venture with Queensland Investment Corporation in respect of the Merry Hill Shopping Centre and the formation by Westfield of its £540m UK shopping centre fund. He also led the SJ Berwin corporate finance teams in two different transactions for which the firm received ‘Real Estate Team of the Year’ awards, respectively from ‘the Lawyer’ in 2004, when acting for Royal Bank of Scotland in relation to the £1.1bn acquisition of two Canary Wharf buildings, and from ‘Legal Business’ in 2005, when acting for Prestbury Group in relation to its £400m acquisition of Travelodge sites. Michael is recommended in the ‘Chambers & Partners’ 2008 legal directory as follows: ‘The ‘simply outstanding’ Michael Goldberg is ‘thorough, methodical and very good face-to-face – in short, a class act’. Refreshingly understated in his approach, he ‘quickly gains the trust and respect of his clients’.’
