Position
Head of EU and competition department. Extensive experience in representing clients in contentious and non-contentious EU and domestic competition work, as well as general EU law. Particularly strong reputation in advising on issues in the pharmaceuticals/life sciences area and the interface between intellectual property rights and competition law. Regularly represents clients in proceedings before the Office of Fair Trading, the Monopolies and Mergers Commission, the European Commission and the Court of First Instance (CFI) and the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg. Represented the European Commission in a number of competition cases before the CFI and the ECJ, and has acted in a number of significant merger clearance enquiries. Successfully established a pan-European competition practice which now spans France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium and the UK, Stephen is also international practice partner for the firm.
Career
Qualified 1980; lectured law in the school of European Studies at Sussex University and the University of Reading before joining SJ Berwin in 1982. Visiting lecturer at the University of Oxford. Has written and lectured extensively on various subjects relating to EU and competition law, and has published numerous articles in most of the leading European law reviews. Additionally, Stephen is on the editorial board for ‘Informa’ and the ‘Journal of Competition Law and Economics’, and is one of the founding members of the Times Law Panel.
