Medical Negligence

Laura is a senior associate and team leader in the medical negligence team at Slater and Gordon in London.

She manages and supervises 7 staff and handles cases involving all aspects of medical negligence (including birth injury for mother and baby, spinal injury, surgical injury, orthopaedic injury, missed or delayed diagnosis, failure to treat and fatal accident cases including inquests) on behalf of injured patients and their families and has focused solely on this practice area since 2008.

Laura has particular experience in spinal injury and delay in diagnosis claims. She has successfully run several cases relating to faulty medical products including failed hip implants and pharmaceutical products. Laura has worked on two large group litigation cases: the Fetal Anti-convulsant Litigation and most recently as Deputy Lead Solicitor on the ground-breaking and successful litigation against negligent breast surgeon, Mr Ian Paterson, which settled for £37 million.  The settlement was approved by the Court, allowing hundreds of claimants (treated Privately by Mr Paterson). This case has brought the issue of Private sector regulation and patient safety to the forefront of media attention and a public inquiry is being undertaken as a result.

Laura joined Slater and Gordon in 2014

Laura is an APIL accredited litigator. She is also a member of the Law Society and the Junior Lawyers Division.

Slater and Gordon's team is praised for offering a comprehensive service that goes beyond compensation by fully supporting injured clients. The team demonstrates particular expertise handling claims of maximum severity and has more recently gained recognition in group-actions, following its lead role in the Paterson (breast surgeon) litigation. Typical instructions include claims involving brain injury, spinal injury, amputations and surgical errors. Practice head Emma Doughty has developed a specialist interest in cancer and obstetric claims, while also dealing with high-value birth injury cases. The 'committed' Laura Preston further brings experience in fatal accidents and inquests.
