Paula is an employment lawyer and is Practice Group Leader for Employment in London.    For ten years, Paula has represented individuals and seniour executives, working with them on the full range of employment law issues, including redundancy, unfair dismissal, bonus, whistleblowing and maternity discrimination disputes.  Paula works closely with her clients to achieve their objectives, from negotiating contractual terms, defending performance and conduct allegations to negotiating favourable exits.  Most recently Paula has run a complete multi-million pound claim in relation to bonus and long term incentives in the High Court, and represented individuals in the Employment Tribunal for whistleblowing and discrimination.  Paula also provides regular media commentary on television, radio and in print.


Paula has practiced employment law exclusively for 10 years and joined Slater and Gordon in 2012


Committee member of the Society of Scottish Lawyers in London, a committee member of the Scottish Discrimination Law Association and a member of the Employment Lawyers Association and Employment Law Group.  Paula is also an external examiner for the employment law elective at the University of Strathclyde.

At Slater and Gordon, national practice head Edward Cooper and his team handle a wide scope of employment matters for their clients, such as corporate advisory work for unions, conducting judicial reviews, handling discrimination claims and advising on pensions. Emma Hawksworth is skilled in handling complex equal pay work and providing GDPR-related advice. The wider team also includes Paula Chan, who is currently acting head of the department for London and advises on contentious and non-contentious employment law issues; Clive Howard, who advises on high-level exits and whistleblowing cases; and new partner Peter Daly, who joined from Bindmans LLP in May 2019.

Slater and Gordon's practice handles all employment-related matters including high-level terminations, breach of contract, bonus disputes, contract advice and reviews, team moves and high-value discrimination claims. The team has recently acted on a number of whistleblower claims involving major banks and global companies, and is increasingly representing NHS and private hospital staff in internal disciplinary proceedings. Paula Chan has been acting as head of the national employment practice, which includes Clive Howard as head of the partnership team, and Deborah Casale as acting head of the London employment team.
