Business crime and regulation.
Position
Partner and head of department; experienced white-collar/business crime practitioner (national and international), including corruption, FSA enforcement powers (including insider dealing), cartel investigations, corporate manslaughter and public inquiries. Examples of white-collar cases are Maxwell 1 and 2 (for Trachtenberg), Barings, and the SFO generic drug cartel prosecution. Public inquiries include the Scott Inquiry, the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, the Marchioness and the Bloody Sunday Inquiry; extensive experience of money laundering, diversion frauds, tax, corruption, and regulatory and professional disciplinary investigations. Acted in the manslaughter proceedings following the Hatfield derailment and is currently acting in the SFO investigation of miners’ compensation claims, the investigation into AIM-listed Langber International, investigations into the sports retail market, and overseas corruption inquiries, including BAE, Mabey & Johnson and Innospec. Has led the business crime and regulation team to develop and adapt to the increasing sophistication of corporate crime and boardroom accountability. Led the team that represented Balfour Beatty in 2008 to secure a groundbreaking settlement with the SFO involving the first use of civil recovery powers.
Career
Articled Kingsley Napley; qualified 1981; joined Russell Jones & Walker 1983 to set up this department which is now based in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester, Newcastle and Wakefield in addition to London; partner since 1985. Appointed Recorder of the Crown Court 2003.
