Position
Main area of practice is libel law, acting for claimants and defendants and giving pre-publication advice. Cases of interest include: Beta Construction v Channel 4 (award of £568,000: highest ever libel award paid to a company); Vladimir Telnikoff v Vladimir Matusevitch (first libel case to go to House of Lords for over a decade, award of £240,000); Jack Slipper v BBC (£50,000 damages, a leading case on liability for republication); Jonathan Hunt (aged six) v The Sun (youngest ever libel claimant); Farargay v Al Hayat (award of £170,000); Skuse v Granada, CA (leading case on meaning); Kirby Harris v Baxter, CA (a leading case on trial by jury); Victor Kiam v Sunday Times (£45,000 damages, the first libel award to be upheld by the Court of Appeal since the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990); Shah v Standard Chartered Bank (the leading case on reasonable grounds to suspect); Scholar v Mail (award of £100,000); Gorman v Mudd (award of £150,000); X v Y (settlement of £200,000 plus costs); Morelli v Sunday Times (the first conditional fee libel case to go to trial, £45,000 plus costs); Kiam v MGN (award of £105,000 plus costs – upheld by the Court of Appeal); Walker v Newcastle Chronicle (settlement of £100,000 plus costs); Rahamim v ITN (settlement of £175,000 plus costs); Wood v West Midlands Police (award of £45,000 upheld by Court of Appeal); Griffin v Guardian (£50,000 damages); Campbell-James v Guardian (award of £58,500); Elton John v Associated Newspapers (offer of amends, settlement of £100,000 plus costs); Murray v MGN (award of £30,000 plus costs); and Stickland v Emap Metro (award of £40,000 plus costs). Has obtained numerous injunctions for breach of confidence, invasion of privacy, libel and to restrain breach of contract. Contributor to ‘Carter-Ruck on Libel and Slander’ (4th-6th editions); regular lecturer on media law, defamation and conditional fees.
