Pannone LLP Advise on Phase 3A of Metrolink for Greater Manchester

June 2008

Manchester law firm Pannone LLP have advised Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) on its appointment of M-Pact Thales to design, build and maintain three new Metrolink extensions as part of a £575 million project. The M-Pact Thales consortium is made up of Laing O’ Rourke, GrantRail and Thales UK.

Working with Parsons Brinckerhoff, GMPTE’s delivery partner for the project, Udo Pope, Head of the Public Sector Team at Pannone led Pannone’s team who have worked on the contract since August 2007. M-Pact Thales was advised by HBJ Gateley Wareing, based in Birmingham.

Udo Pope said, "We are delighted to have advised GMPTE on this prestigious project. We worked with GMPTE over 10 years ago on the extension of Metrolink to Eccles and it is great to see the plans for the Phase 3A extensions finally come to fruition."

Philip Purdy, GMPTE’s Metrolink Director, said: "Residents and businesses across Greater Manchester have been hugely supportive of the Metrolink expansion and I’m pleased we’ve now been able to appoint a construction company to carry out the work."

The new Metrolink lines will cover nearly 20 miles and include 26 stops. New tram lines are due to start opening in Greater Manchester from Spring 2011 after transport bosses shook hands on a deal to extend the network. The new lines to Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden in Tameside and Chorlton in South Manchester will nearly double the size of the Metrolink network. The Department for Transport gave its final approval for the project last month and construction work is due to start early next year.
