Each year The Lex 100 surveys thousands of trainees in the major UK law firms. This is an extract from their independent findings:

The lowdown (in their own words...)
Why did you choose this firm over any others? 'Welcoming and friendly attitude during vac scheme'; 'the high opinions of existing trainees'; 'firm has a fantastic reputation for being involved in exciting and high-quality work'; 'range of seats: I wasn't sure where I wanted to end up, so thought I could try both commercial and private client'
How does your training compare with peers' at other firms? 'Higher quality of work and not too pressured'; 'lots more client contact than peers at other firms, we also receive lots of seminars and in-house training'; 'better overall working life: good involvement on cases but without excessive hours'; 'supervisor is a lot more involved in my day-to-day activities'; 'atmosphere among trainees is one of camaraderie'
Best thing about the firm? 'Location, hours, social life, atmosphere in the office'; 'great client and partner contact together with an overall ethos which is relaxed but at the same time gets the job done. Management by cakes and bonus holidays is also pretty good'; 'your efforts are rewarded'
Worst thing about the firm? 'All the cakes for birthdays, holidays and just sometime because it's a Tuesday! They are making me fat!'; 'no communal space like a canteen or café area'; 'less competitive wages'; 'uncertainty about seats but that's due to the climate'; 'lack of bonus structure, although the ethos is relatively laid back, it's still a serious firm and people work very hard'
Best moment? 'Taking witness statements at a very famous football club and meeting all the players!'; 'giving the trainee speech at the Christmas party'; 'going to the RCJ on a judicial review'; 'getting involved in one of the biggest cases of our department. Travelling to meet the client, witnesses and attending court'
Worst moment? 'Three solid days I spent locked in a room checking a client's loss schedule'; 'being on the receiving end of a partner having a bad day'; 'rush to get bundles for trial, although this has helped me to appreciate more how these are put together and used'; 'losing a High Court case'
