We're committed to ensuring we attain our business objectives by operating and behaving in ways that benefit our employees, the community and the wider environment.
We created our Giving Something Back forum to provide a focal point for our community activities. Our partners and staff work together in support of charities, the environment and the wider community.

Supporting SMEs

  • We provide advice free of charge as part of a non-cash sponsorship arrangement with Scottish Insitute for Enterprise (SIE) which will benefit Scotland's most innovative and entrepreneurial students. SIE’s business and Innovation Team works closely with students and new graduates in Scotland’s Universities and Colleges who are committed to developing strong and sustainable businesses. Identifying when entrepreneurs need professional advice and supporting them through this is a key focus and our expertise in helping high growth entrepreneurial start-ups helps to ensure that Scotland's entrepreneurs set off on the right business footing.
  • Start-ups - we have been involved in the Gateway to Investment (GTI) programme for many years and have advised a number of start-up companies from the GTI programme. We provide initial legal training at quarterly GTI workshops free of charge. GTI is run by Business Gateway Edinburgh.
  • In addition to speaking at the GTI workshops, we send one of our solicitors to attend a free monthly legal clinic run by Business Gateway Edinburgh at its premises in Leith.
  • We hold a free monthly legal clinic at our offices in Quartermile to help people - in particular, recently graduated students - with business advice for start-ups.

Other activities

  • We have chosen to support SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) as our Charity Partner for 2018 as part of a wider focus on positive mental wellbeing in the workplace.
  • Our Third Sector Team provides legal advice to a number of clients on a fixed fee basis which is often below the work recorded. Discounted rates are offered to new clients who are referred through Social Investment Scotland.

Community and Education

  • We have, for a number of years, supported The Schools Law Project, through which we sponsor four schools to introduce pupils to the legal system.

We have robust policies, excellent female role models and a supportive culture, all of which help us to deliver inclusion, diversity and equality. 33% of our partners are women and 75% of our lawyers are female. 33% of our staff are on a flexible working pattern. All of these statistics are higher than our profession average.

We recently launched an agile working policy enabling our staff to apply to work at times and in locations which they find convenient, so long as this is allied to meeting and exceeding the needs of clients.

We challenge ourselves on our statistics, engaging with our staff, clients and the profession in order to ensure we are doing our utmost to deliver on our strategy. We have Investors in People accreditation which we have held since 2010 and this is a useful benchmark.
