Sports boutique Northridge Law LLP, which was founded in 2017 and now has almost 30 specialist sports lawyers, acts for high-profile sportspeople, international governing bodies, sports clubs and major brands. The team has recently strengthened its presence in gaming and betting with the recruitment of two lawyers for this work. This adds to its existing experience of large-scale governance and disciplinary reviews, disputes for clients such as the FA and commercial deals for individuals and corporate clients, including sponsorship agreements and service agreements. As a contentious adviser to the FA, Jonathan Ellis is frequently involved in high-profile disputes, including successfully defending the FA in appeals brought by several football clubs in respect of its licence application process for the restructured Women’s Super League. Ian Lynam, whose broad expertise spans financial regulation, governance, player contracts and M&A, represented AC Milan in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, where he managed to overturn their ban from European football following allegations that they were in breach of the Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations. On the commercial side, the team has advised new client PUMA on a partnership deal with F1 racer Lewis Hamilton. Disputes partner James Eighteen is also recommended by clients.
