Position

Richard is a partner who handles a wide variety of matters relating to charterparties, bills of lading and contracts for the international sale of goods; his particular speciality is commodity trading and he regularly conducts cases in the Commercial Court and arbitrations before GAFTA, FOSFA, LMAA, ICC, LCIA, RSA, LME, Poram and Cietac in relation to grain, vegetable oil, crude oil, petroleum, chemicals, metals, sugar, cotton and rice. Clients include international trading houses, commodity and derivatives traders, oil majors and traders, banks, shipowners, charterers and marine insurers from around the world. Major cases include Deutsche Schachtbau v Raknoc & Shell International; Kloeckner v Gatoil; Comdel v Siporex; and the Sumitomo Copper Scandal.

Qualified 1977; assistant solicitor Coward Chance 1978-84; partner Middleton Potts 1985-96; partner RD Black & Co 1996-2002; partner Barlow Lyde & Gilbert 2002-present. Publications include: article on performance bonds in the inaugural issue of ‘Lloyd’s Maritime and Trade Law Quarterly’.
