Partner and head of the national pensions unit; specialises in advising employers and trustees on closure and cessation of accrual and funding issues, pensions projects, derisking of pension schemes, pension scheme mergers and demergers, entry to the Pension Protection Fund, corporate transactions, pensions litigation, pension documentation, insurance company products, trusteeship and training, advising employers and trustees on all aspects of pensions law; Pensions Regulator Clearance applications; acted on numerous Pensions Ombudsman matters including: acting for the successful trustees in KC Independent Trustees Limited; and Miller v Pensions Ombudsman and Stapleton [1996] 2AER; defending the Ombudsman’s appeal to Court of Appeal; acted for Providence Capitol Trustees in Providence Capitol Trustees Ltd v Pensions Ombudsman and Ayres [1996]; acted for the first financial adviser accused of misselling personal pension plans and successfully defended a FIMBRA arbitration and obtained legal costs from the complainants.

Qualified 1988; specialist in pensions law since 1988; partner Maclay Murray & Spens LLP from 1999; formerly co-author of the three volume work ‘Ellison: Pensions Law and Practice’.
