Within: Public sector

The 'personable, enthusiastic, committed and engaged' team at Capital Law LLP is 'impressively strong at public law and regulatory/compliance issues' where it is able to provide 'expert advice on the Welsh jurisdiction and Wales’ specific legal requirements'. The team has picked up a significant amount of public sector work since its appointment to the NPS panel including Jeremy Williams' work for the Welsh government on the M4 relief road project, work which has expanded to include dealing with all the parties affected where the proposed relief road impacts on their interests. The 'very approachable and knowledgeable all-rounder' Nicola Mead-Batten has a 'real capacity for lateral thinking and a great commercial acumen', particularly as it relates to judicial review matters as demonstrated by her high-profile work alongside commercial litigator Stephen Meade for the British Medical Association. Senior associate Rhiannon Holtham 'has very strong waste procurement knowledge' and is acting for Caerphilly County Borough Council on the procurement of the Organics Waste treatment contract.

Commercial litigation

The ‘personable, enthusiastic, engaged and committed‘ five-partner team at Capital Law LLP displays a ‘breadth of talent‘ which enables it to handle a broad spectrum of litigation running the gamut from corporate disputes through to high-stakes public law matters. Andrew Brown has particular experience within the third-party funding sphere, and in a case which was funded through the firm’s own litigation fund, he is representing Deloitte, as the liquidator of DJ Litts, on its £40m professional negligence claim against its former auditors for failing to detect and inform the innocent directors about a fraudulent ponzi scheme. Displaying a ‘real mastery of detail‘, team head Stephen Meade ‘confidently handles complex litigation‘ for clients including the British Medical Association (BMA), which he is acting for in proceedings brought against the Secretary of State for Health for a declaration regarding the contractual effect of the Clinical Excellence Awards (CEA) scheme and the terms and conditions of service for consultants in England. Promoted to partner in November 2017, the ‘extremely commercial' Nicola Mead Batten demonstrates ‘obvious technical ability and a real capacity for lateral thinking‘, particularly in relation to judicial review and public law matters. The team is rounded out at a partner level by the ‘very helpful' Philip Jones, who excels at handling corporate and finance disputes, and IP litigator Wayne Beynon.  Other clients include Roadchef, Cardiff City Football Club and The Royal Mint.

Professional negligence

Within: Professional negligence

Capital Law LLP 's 'very innovative commercial dispute resolution team' approaches professional negligence work with 'great ingenuity and expertise', for both claimants and defendants. Headed by the 'very commercial and effective' Andrew Brown, the firm has handled several professional negligence claims under the umbrella of its own litigation fund, Capital Dispute Finance, including on behalf of Deloitte, as liquidators of DJ Litts on its £40m professional negligence claim against its former auditors who failed to detect and inform the innocent directors about a ponzi scheme being run by one of the directors of the company. The 'highly experienced, technical and personable' Stephen Meade also has expertise in the area and alongside Brown is representing claimants in a multimillion-pound action brought against their former lawyers alleging losses brought about by their negligent advice in relation to the terms of a freezing order to which the clients were subject to. 'Detail-oriented' solicitor Lucy Emanual is also recommended.
