Position

Janet McDavid is Co-practice Head of Hogan Lovells’ antitrust, competition and economic regulation practice, with a particular emphasis on mergers, government investigations, and antitrust policy issues.

Career

Janet McDavid is a Past Chair of the ABA Antitrust Section, provided antitrust transition advice to the Obama, Bush, and Clinton Administrations, and advised the U.S. Department of Defense on antitrust issues. Jan currently is a Senior Vice Chair at the Antitrust Committee of the International Bar Association and a Non-Governmental Advisor at the International Competition Network. She is also a frequent speaker and author on antitrust issues around the globe.

Hogan Lovells US LLP’s international platform makes it a strong choice for cartel investigations spanning the US, EU and places further afield. Its team includes San Franciso-based Megan Dixon, who was formerly a prosecutor at the DOJ (where she focused on international cartel cases). In addition, Kathryn Hellings acted as the assistant chief of the DOJ’s National Criminal Enforcement Section. Recently promoted partner Justin Bernick has experience in government antitrust investigations. Senior associate Daniel Shulak is another name to note in the group; his recent work spans areas such as generic pharmaceutical drugs, financial services and container shipping. Former FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez joined the firm in September 2017 and succeeds Janet McDavid as leader of the US team. Andrew J. Lee recently joined from Steptoe & Johnson LLP.

Hogan Lovells US LLP is sought after to defend companies against high-profile multibillion-dollar claims before federal and state courts nationwide. Its group includes Washington DC-based Justin Bernick, who is representing multiple Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance plans in Re Blue Cross Blue Shield Antitrust Litigation. Also located in Washington DC is Benjamin Holt, who is working with New York City practitioners Marc Gottridge, Dennis Tracey and senior associate DeNae Thomas to advise Société Générale on 30 individual and putative class actions arising from an alleged conspiracy among banks to manipulate the London Gold Fixing. Air Canada, American Express and United Healthcare are among other active clients. Edith Ramirez joined joined the Washington DC office from the FTC in 2017 to lead the US team, succeeding former head Janet McDavid. Since publication, Robert Robertson has moved to DLA Piper LLP (US).

Merger control

Hogan Lovells US LLP’s US team undertakes matters on a standalone basis, and also works with non-US offices across the global network in complex multi-jurisdictional billion-dollar transactions. The group fields a number of seasoned practitioners in the merger control space, including Joseph Krauss, Janet McDavid and Robert Leibenluft (who focuses on the healthcare and life sciences sector). Leigh Oliver and senior associates Lauren Battaglia and Robert Baldwin are working with members of the London office to advise LabCorp on the antitrust aspects of its $1.2bn acquisition of UK-based Chiltern. In 2017, Oliver and others successfully defended Advocate Health Care Network against the FTC’s action to stop the client’s merger with NorthShore University HealthSystem. Logan Breed, Rachel Brandenburger in New York and Meghan Rissmiller are other recommended individuals. Edith Ramirez, who joined the firm in September 2017, succeeded McDavid as head of the US team. Named individuals are based in Washington DC, except where otherwise stated. Since publication, Robert Robertson has moved to DLA Piper LLP (US).
