Julianne is a Partner in Hogan Lovells' international arbitration and litigation practices and head of the firm's Business and Human Rights Group.

She has been appointed to the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR as a member of the Task Force on Emergency Arbitrator Proceedings. She has extensive experience of complex, high-value commercial disputes (including ad hoc arbitrations and arbitrations under the rules of the ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL and ICSID), focusing in particular on emerging markets in the natural resources, life sciences, TMT, Diversified Industries and Financial Institution sectors.

The team represented several entities in the Energy Standard group of companies in two consolidated LCIA arbitrations against companies owned by a Russian billionaire; the dispute concerned the ownership and control of a significant Ukrainian joint venture between the parties, which produces equipment used in the extraction and transportation of natural gas. Global litigation and arbitration head Michael Davison is 'very smart and an excellent operator', and London international arbitration head Kieron O’Callaghan is 'highly dedicated and an experienced arbitrator'. Hogan Lovells International LLP is 'excellent for public international law and provides good responsiveness and professional advice'. The practice has specifiic expertise in bilateral investment treaties (BITs), with a niche specialisation in cases at the intersection of public international law (PIL) and human rights law; it also has a particular focus on Russia and CIS-related disputes as well as having energy and telecoms-related expertise; and has provided substantial advice on the PIL aspects of Brexit. It represented the Government of Vietnam in the successful defence of an investment treaty claim brought under the France-Vietnam BIT by a French investor, which related to non-payment of debts by state-owned enterprises. Markus Burgstaller 'has very good commercial acumen, is very attentive to detail and never neglects the importance of tactical steps'. Burgstaller has considerable experience as an advocate in proceedings before international tribunals, the EU courts, the European Court of Human Rights and national courts; he also handles a significant amount of work on the law of international organisations, privileges and immunities, and the Law of the Sea. Other key practitioners are Charles Brasted , who heads the firm’s UK and EU public law and policy practice; and co-head of the business and human rights practice Julianne Hughes-Jennett, who is 'very smart and reliable'.
