Position

Jon Chertkow works with banks, lenders, payment innovators and retailers to keep on top of regulatory change affecting the banking and payments industry. Using industry and regulatory knowledge built up over more than 12 years working in this sector, Jon helps clients launch new products, establish new operations, carry out compliance audits of their existing business and engage with regulators and customers. Jon also brings his regulatory and industry knowledge to assist clients in entering into strategic outsourcing agreements and M&A activity, including loan portfolio acquisitions and disposals, Part VII banking transfers and card co-branding arrangements.

Its areas of strength include outsourcings, strategic alliances, marketing and advertising contracts, and IT contracts.  In 2017, global commercial head Peter Watts and senior associate Oliver Wilson assisted AB inBev with the procurement of media buying and planning services. The firm also has a longstanding relationship with the British Paralympic Association; Richard Welfare advised the client on various commercial matters related to the Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Games, including the negotiation of sponsorship and supplier agreements, and also the preparation of a Team Members Agreement. The firm also undertakes work for clients in sectors such as TMT, automotive, life sciences, and transport and logistics. Rachel Kent, Jonathan Chertkow, Michael Thomas and consultant Dominic Hill specialise in commercial contracts in the financial services industry. The firm also has a particularly strong capability in the energy and infrastructure sector; Adrian Walker, Andrew Briggs, David Moss, Gillian Thomas and Jeremy Brittenden focus on commercial contracts and projects in this area.

Assisted by Jonathan Chertkow, Emily Reid and Richard Diffenthal, John Salmon has been advising Open Banking on its project to create open APIs in the UK's retail banking sector; this involves regular negotiations with the nine large banks funding it, as well as commercial negotiations with payment service providers. Rachel Kent acted for DualityBanx on obtaining FCA authorisation, and advised Brolly UK Technology on various regulatory issues. Salmon and Diffenthal acted for Refineryy on the development and implementation of its blockchain-based platform to facilitate commercial real estate transactions. Chertkow assisted Monzo Bank with launching its lending products as part of its move into offering full current account services. Other fintech clients include Habito and Zopa. On the corporate side, Maegen Morrison, John Connell and Don McGown acted for Paysafe Group on its £3bn takeover offer from a Blackstone- and CVC-led consortium.
